    Linux-based app for blackjack

It's a long story that I won't bore you with, but I need to learn how to play blackjack. I don't know any card games other than old maid and solitaire. I figured, no problem, I would just install a blackjack or a multiple-card-game app from the repository and read up on the rules and start playing. Was I ever surprised to find that there's no blackjack game in Muon.

I googled around and downloaded a few Linux blackjack games that I could not get to work. Finally I found a java-based one that does:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/blac...e=typ_redirect

It has no installer. I had to manually choose "Edit Applications" to put its icon into Games and then I had to dink with its file permissions, but I did get it to run. However, I thought I would still run it by you guys in case anyone here knows of a really kick-butt blackjack app, and maybe one not written in a slovenly language like java. Plus, as you've surely guessed, I'm not much of a card player and would not know if the app I've chosen is simulating blackjack very well.

I've never been to Vegas, but if I did go, I probably wouldn't even play cards. I would probably grab some waitress's boobies and get thrown out by a mean bouncer named Bruno.

Black jack: all the players are playing against the house ,,,,, every one gets 2 cards 1 face up 1 face down ,,,,,,,,,you try to get 21 .

all # cards ar the face value the K,Q,J are all 10 the Ace is ether 1 or 11 ,,,you get to chose if in the first 2 cards you have an Ace and anything worth 10 it's black jack and you win unless the house has 21 as well ,,,,,,,all ties go to the house.

as play goes round the table you can get more cards (you say ,,hit me)and get 1 more card face up you can get as many hits as you wish BUT if you have OVER 21 you bust (loose)+ getting 5 cards without going over 21 is called a 5 card Charley and you win (in some circles)

so lets say your first 2 cards are a K and a 9 thats 19 ,,,,,,if you get a hit,, it would half to be a 2 or an ACE or you will go over 21 and bust. so you would stay and hope the house dose not get 20 or 21

Not exactly. In Las Vegas, a tie is called a "push" and your wager is returned to you.

It should also be noted that specific rules can vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. For example, many tables in Las Vegas the dealer must hit on 16 -- not so, in other jurisdictions. Also the pay out for 21, differs usually depending on the jurisdiction and the the number of card decks shuffled together.

Blackjack is a game that if played properly can last a long time before your "budgeted" gambling money is lost. But, in the long run, you can count on losing...

I was hired in 1980 to demonstrate an "AI" card for the Apple called "SAVVY" at the Las Vega Comdex. After hours I'd tour the strip. There was a "war" between the casinos about over which casino returned the most amount of the gambler' money. At the time claims were that a gambler "got back" 96 to 98 dollars out of every hundred he wagered. I don't know how many figured it out but getting back only (or even) 98 dollars out of every 100 you bet means that sooner or later you will lose all your money. ((100*.98)*.98)*...

One night, after a walking tour of the strip, I returned to my room at the Frontier. I had to pass through the casino to get to my room. I passed a little old lady setting at a 10 cent slot machine. She had a bonnet on and a calico dress, with white concord tennis shoes. In front of her were several cottage cheese containers full of dimes, and on the floor was a carton of cigarettes. It was about 10PM. When I walked by her the next morning, about 7AM, she was down to one cottage cheese container with, perhaps a buck or two of dimes in it. There was a single cigarette pack next to the cottage cheese container with the dimes. The other cottage cheese containers were filled with cigarette butts. Her eyes were blood shot, she had tobacco stains running down the corners of her mouth. Her fingers were stained black by Sliver. She was still pumping the one armed bandit. She stunk. I suspect she was spending her social security money.
