Does booting with "video=radeon:modeset=1" make a difference?
Also the output of "dmesg | grep radeon" might give some clues (although it's unfortunate if you can't get to a text tty when the boot fails)
IIRC, the radeon driver requires modesetting these days (so it wouldn't be surprising you have problems like wrong resolution if you use "nomodeset" or "radeon.modeset=0").
