    Other Multimedia Woes

    As well as the Videpero editing problems, I have found that VLC does not play WMV files. When starting VLC from the command line, I get the following
    Code:
    $ vlc ant_victory.wmv
    VLC media player 2.1.2 Rincewind (revision 2.1.2-0-ga4c4876)
    [COLOR=#008000][0x1020118][/COLOR] main libvlc: [B]Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.[/B]

    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
    If I try to use Dolphin the play the WMV file from the Information panel it crashes. If I try to view mp4 or flv files from the Information panel, I get sound but no image. This worked previously in 13.10.

    Does anyone else have these problems?

    wmv & vlc & something

    The wmv is a container format etc... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Video

    An example: http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/asf-wmv/ -> asf_with_chapters.wmv

    The Mediainfo ( http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/mediainfo ) is telling of the asf_with_chapters.wmv:

    Format : Windows Media
    File size : 15.6 MiB
    Duration : 28s 82ms
    Overall bit rate mode : Variable
    Overall bit rate : 4 667 Kbps
    Maximum Overall bit rate : 4 911 Kbps
    Movie name : ASF chapters test
    Performer : Window Media File Editor

    Video
    ID : 3
    Format : VC-1
    Format profile : MP@ML
    Codec ID : WMV3
    Codec ID/Info : Windows Media Video 9

    Audio #1
    ID : 2
    Format : WMA
    Format version : Version 2
    Codec ID : 161
    Codec ID/Info : Windows Media Audio
    Seems to play with the VLC, at here, without problems.

    If I try to use Dolphin the play the WMV file from the Information panel it crashes. If I try to view mp4 or flv files from the Information panel, I get sound but no image
    Phonon backend ? GStreamer ? or VLC ?
    Does the Dragon player play it ?

    Here the information panel preview has worked sometimes but not always - so I use the external preview: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...-and-Konqueror

    With the KDE SC 4.13.0 the information panel preview is working with the GStreamer backend but not working with the VLC backend - tested with the big_buck_bunny_480p_H264_AAC_25fps_1800K.MP4

    Sample: http://download.openbricks.org/sampl...5fps_1800K.MP4

      I installed Dragon Player and it behaved the same way as VLC on WMV files.

      The major difference is that much more output was generated. It does not make a lot of sense to me, but here it is:
      Code:
      $ dragon ant_victory.wmv

      My gstreamer packages were installed using gst123 and I have subsequently installed extra gstreamer packages which made no difference.

      As I get the option to file a bug report, I may do so if this problem cannot be resolved easily.

        I now have Kubuntu 14.04 on another 2 computers and I do not get any video from the Dolphin's Information Panel for mp4, flv and wmv files. I have now filed a bug report.

          When I encountered similar problems I used the mozilla-vlc plug in and could watch the media files in Firefox. No idea why but it worked. You may wish to attempt that.

            I have no problem watching media files in Firefox. Actually the plug in that is required is browser-plugin-vlc.

            What I am wanting to do is briefly check the content of media files with Dolphin rather than having to launch them to check them out. This feature was working previously in Kubuntu 13.10
