LibreOffice Spell Check doesn't work - no words ever found misspelled.

Last week I upgraded Kubuntu from 13.10 to 14.04 on both my laptop and desktop.

On the laptop, everything works great!

On the desktop, I've noticed that when I have Writer open, no matter how bad I misspell a word, Writer never sees it misspelled.

Autocheck in the top menu is selected.

Manually selecting Spelling and Grammar comes up with no words misspelled.

For language settings, "English USA" is installed.

I would submit this a bug, but with the exact same settings on the notebook (KDE 4.13.0, Libreoffice 4.2.3.3) it's working correctly.

a couple things come to mind:
1. do you have the correct library installed.
2. is your system completely updated?
Here libreoffice spell checker is working fine.
try doing a dist-upgrade. In a terminal type

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Didn't come up with any new packages.

If I uninstall Libreoffice and reinstall, do you think it will grab the missing package(s) then?

it's working fine on my notebook, so I figure I'm missing something here on the desktop!

that would be my next step would try uninstalling and re-installing.
Note that just uninstalling the libreoffice may not un-install all it's files. So I would do it from a terminal with this command

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice

Solved, and I didn't have to purge Libreoffice!

When the command "purge libreoffice" came back with a "package not found" error, I opened up Muon Package Manager to see what was installed.

I noticed that the package Libreoffice metapackage wasn't installed, but several individual components were.

Searching for language packs "en-us", I found the "hunspell-en-us" package installed. I installed and then reinstalled that package, and now spell checker works!
