Thank you GreyGeek. You helped me to overcome this problem. In both drivers, there are two ways to choose b&w or color and one way doesn't work on the contrary to the other one.
My parents are like you. They have had a color printer; but sometimes I need to print comics and with colors it's better :-)
Still, I miss the ability to print different parts of a document in one go as I wrote recently.

I presume they do this because printer companies sell consumer printers for a small amount, basically just enough to pay the retailers for stocking them, then cream it on expensive cartridges. It makes more sense to get an "office" printer, where one pays a realistic price for the printer, and the cartridges are more reasonable. When I bought my HP our local consumer organization had tested a bunch and the "OfficeJet" worked out cheaper per page in less than 2 years with only moderate use. However, the HP cartridge prices have crept up since then, from $NZ 20 to $NZ 30.

My HP inkjet did come with a starter cartridge but I replaced it with a full $58 color & bw cartridge and that is the one completely exhausted trying to print ONE decent color photo of my grandson and I. Now, if I want a color print I take a jpg to Walmart, and for other printing I sent it to my HP LaserJet P1606dn duplex BW printer, which I've used for about 8 years. It has worked faultlessly, and each toner gives about 3,000 pages.

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry, I've been thinking that the printer was correctly installed, but I still cannot choose from which tray it will print. I have a Samsung clp-550 N, I installed the drivers
- clp 550 N Footmatic/postscript (recommanded),
- clp 550 N Footmatic/pxlcolor,
- clp 550 Footmatic/postscript (recommended) and
- clp 550 Footmatic/pxlcolor.
Only with the pxlcolor drivers I can choose the tray, but it is useless. It doesn't print as I specified. I can also choose the tray in the system (printer configuration) but it is also useless. It doesn't remember about it and it prints only from the upper tray.

I would be very happy to be helped :-)

I went into the CUPS, I added a printer, I choose "socket" and wrote the printer link, I choose "Samsung-CLP-550-pxlcolor.ppd" (because the postscript.ppd version don't allow to choose a tray) that I downloaded, I choose "lower tray" in the configaration among other things.
When I print, the configuration is already set on "lower tray". Yet it still prints with paper from the upper tray. I also tried with "middle tray" and in this case it also prints with paper from the upper tray.

Furthermore, I always specified black and white and it printed in colors for all tests.
(I am using Kubuntu 16.04 ;*I had the same problems with Kubuntu 14.04 that I used on another computer)

Hmmmm, that's curious. More research is needed. Just how many paper trays does that thing have? Sounds like it's stuck on Color and Upper tray all the time.

There's some comments on OpenPrinting.org about Ghostscript bugs effecting tray selection. I didn't research it fully but I linked to that page for you.

I saw both mono/color and tray selection in there, unlike the postscript driver, but the bug issue might be in the way.

Dear All and dear oshunluvr,

Thank you very much for your support. I could print from the lower tray and in white and black after having installed a third kind of driver (the Samsung CLP-550, 2.0.0) :-) :-)
It is the only driver which clearly asks in the CUPS if I want to activate a second tray.
I didn't need to upload a .ppd file.
