With 12.10 to 14.04 after upgrade i ended up with initrd and vmlinuz files in root pointing to nothing (actually files in /boot went missing since something went bad with update-initramfs) and system failed to boot and i ended up formatting root and reinstalling everything from scratch. I shall install BackInTime and keep a backup on external HD as suggested just to be safe before upgrading to 16.04
