How to clean up old images and grub - trying to clean up no shut down and bad reboots

Below is what I get on update-grub command.

I assume that I can go to the repository and delete the images but ---

    1. Will that allow grub to update?
    2. Will that remove any other older files, etc.

Basically, you can use Muon Updater (not Muon Discover) to purge the proper files. Always keep at least the two latest kernel versions. Check your /boot directory to see what old kernels you have. Example, the latest kernel I have is vmlinuz-3.13.0-44-generic. Thus, I would keep the -44 and all its files, keep the -43 and all its files, but then purge -42, -41, etc., and all their files (see the link above for the relevant files).

from just your update-grub output you only have 2 kernels , and you should keep them both ,,,, the initrd.img's are necessary for each kernel .

        post the output of
        Code:
        ls /boot | grep vm
and wee will see for shure.

Well before getting back to this post I was reading some other posts in other places. A lot of people talked about using autoremove with purge. I ran it but it said something about not being able to run purge.

Then I came back to this forum and started reading.

I used Muon and it had some updates and then I saw the remove unnecessary packages. I wants to remove -3.13.0-44 but I don't want to remove that one, I want to keep the current 3.13.0-45 and the -3.13.0-44. I can't get it to stop wanting to remove 3.13.0-44.

          Or ........................

If I remove 3.13.0-44 would that mean that I still have 13.10 (13.10) and 3.13.0-45 and therefore the 3.13.0.44 is the true unnecessary package?

I already know I don't have much space. If I have 14.04 why does my grub not show it?

Anyhow here is the HD space

                  df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
                  /dev/sda5 9.8G 8.5G 851M 92% /
                  none 4.0K 0 4.0K 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
                  udev 987M 12K 987M 1% /dev
                  tmpfs 201M 1.7M 199M 1% /run
                  none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
                  none 1001M 152K 1001M 1% /run/shm
                  none 100M 20K 100M 1% /run/user

Oh the 500 HD is an external storage drive.

                    post the output of

I assumed you had 14.04 because that is the sub-forum your posting in and the kernel's you have are what we have in 14.04 right now.

your "update-grub" output is saying you have Ubuntu/Kubuntu-13.10 on /dev/sdb1 and your parted output has /dev/sdb1 as a 500GB fat32 formated drive .

+ your df -h output is telling the linux you are running now is on /dev/sda5

the command above will tell the version of Ubuntu/Kubuntu you are running.

                    allso post the output of
                    Code:
                    cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and please , please wrap that output in [CODE] tags ,,,,,,, click the # icon in the text helper icons above the text box you are replying in and it will insert them for you ,,,, copy and past the output between the.................................. your "update-grub" output is saying you have Ubuntu/Kubuntu-13.10 on /dev/sdb1 and your parted output has /dev/sdb1 as a 500GB fat32 formated drive .

+ your df -h output is telling the linux you are running now is on /dev/sda5

the command above will tell the version of Ubuntu/Kubuntu you are running.

dose it not show it (14.04)when you boot >grub menu> chose wether to boot into 14.04 or XP ,,,,,,,,,,,or did you set things to auto boot striate to 14.04

grub.cfg (what makes your grub menu) dose not show a 13.10 entry ,,,strange since your update grub did .

dose the box boot striate to Kubuntu with out stopping at the grub menu ?

if so when you reboot you can hold down or keep taping the Shift key right after pressing the power button to force it to show ,,,,,,,

PS:when you say grub dosent show it (14.04 ) that is because you dont see the version of Linux you are on when running "update-grub" (just the kernels) when you see the found 13.10 and found XP that is the OS-prober part of grub ,,,,,,,,finding those things

                          Boot gives me options

Several Ubuntu options such as recover or something like that, boot to two different 13 somethings and boot to XP. There is no option to boot to 14.04.

For a while I was having problems with reboot and I would need to do it from the terminal. Then there were times I would get an odd desktop after booting. From top to bottom I would have a 2 inch black banner on the right side.

I would then boot into recovery and hit repackage, reboot and normally it would then show a normal desktop. Now the previous protocol is not working and I have to choose resume boot in the recovery mode. I have a full screen but drivers stink. Fonts are fuzzy and resolution is not normal. Display is set to its usual 1024 X 768.

I can use the system, I can probably get accustomed to the system but in a way it ticks me off. I've been under the wrong impression that Linux stuff is darn near bullet proof but during my learning curve it can crack. Unlike Win, once it cracks there is no restore mode.

Windows XP that is still on this laptop, that has been on for @ 13 years, still boots and looks perfect. I may need to go back to XP.

                            UPDATE

I ran recovery again and booted into the desktop with the unclear fonts.......also somewhere along the line in recovery I saw a LOT of error messages and those messages had to do with different PPA's
Once booted I logged in and out a few times and then rebooted.

                            Rebooted
I ran in recovery mode again using Fdisk
                            Restarted --- rebooted
Restarted and now I have the normal looking desktop - correct looking fonts

Windows does have various reset/restore modes; e.g., on laptops, too. Some can take time. Linux, in a sense, has a quick restore mode: simply reinstall it! Piece of cake, and relatively quick. Reconfiguring takes time, but that is a sunk cost in both Win and Linux.
