Hi I have been using kubuntu for a while now and just yesterday it started to boot to command line where I have to enter username and password and then startx to get to desktop. I have looked at some of the log files but can't see anything. I have also uninstalled nvidia graphic but did not do anything. Recovery mode did not help. Any ideas? I am using kernel 3.13.0-36 and everthing is up to date.

The problem arose before I uninstalled nvidia. I only uninstalled nvidia to see if that would help, it did not. I reinstalled nvidia again. By te way the system settings driver manager does not work properly, it seems to continuously search for driver lists. I install the nvidia 343 driver by edgers ppa method.
Another thing about your answer is that I do not and I don't think I ever had a xorg.conf in /etc/X11 which always seemed odd.
The boot problem remains, system boots to command prompt and I have to log in and password and startx. Could it have been something about sudo apt-get autoremove removing something?

I have seemed to stumble on to the problem when I discover in dmesg 'kdm main process 1256 killed by Term signal'. Searching for this I found http://techforumnetwork.com/techqns/...-doesnt-start/. So I purged lightdm and installed kdm and it's working now. Phew another few hours fiddling.

It looks like now that you were able to purge lightdm you might be able to put it back.

and for reference it has a "cant see desktop" section: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LightDMKubuntu 18.04 on AMD
