    Kubuntu very slow boot

    Hi!
    I'm new here...

    I have a boot problem. It takes about 3 minutes for my laptop to boot.
    I have Kubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on the machine (I do not have dual boot with windows).
    Machine is: Acer S3-951 (HDD: 320GB, i5 1.60GHz processor with turbo mode, 4GB RAM).

    Durring installation I partitioned my hard disk like this:
    - First partition is /boot and is 1024 MB large
    - Second partition is swap and is 5GB large
    - Third partition (rest of the disk) is the / partition
    - When typing df command it looks like this:
    matej@aspire-S3:~$ df
    Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda5 301627880 9890868 276392168 4% /
    none 4 0 4 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
    udev 1933772 4 1933768 1% /dev
    tmpfs 389732 1328 388404 1% /run
    none 5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock
    none 1948644 332 1948312 1% /run/shm
    none 102400 20 102380 1% /run/user
    /dev/sda1 967320 83132 817836 10% /boot

    My BIOS settings are - disk controller - IDE (ACHI won't boot at all as far as I remember), iRST disabled, hard disk is first in boot priority list.

    When I power on my laptop it shows the Acer logo for about half a minute.
    Then it shows black screen for about a minute or so, and then it shows Kubuntu logo.
    Previously, when I had only Windows 7 installed on the machine the logo disappeared quickly and the boot process took only 17 seconds.
    I tried fixing this by Googling it, and I followed some of the solutions on these websites:
    https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...rk-4175510497/
    http://www.dotkam.com/2008/08/06/spe...he-background/
    http://http://www.howtogeek.com/1157...eed-up-ubuntu/
    None of these links helped me.

    This is what dmesg command showed after the boot:

    And also, here is my bootchart image (the full sized png):
    http://i.imgur.com/Iq5q3X9.png

    I don't know how to read the bootchart, but in dmesg it is clear that the problem is somewhere in these lines:
    [ 3.186468] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk
    [ 7.122993] ata2.00: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)

    [ 27.212098] ata2.00: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
    [ 56.412969] ata2.00: SRST failed (errno=-16)
    [ 56.412990] ata2.00: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps

    I Googled the "ata2.00: SRST failed (errno=-16)" error, and "ata2.00: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)", but I did not find any useful info.

    My questions are:
    1) How can I confirm that this is not a Hard Disk Drive issue (I don't think it is hard drive issue, because Windows 7 booted very very quickly, and once the Kubuntu boots hard disk works without any problems) ?
    2) If it is not a hardware issue what can I do ?
    3) What exactly does the above specified error in the dmesg mean ?

    I can take pictures of my BIOS settings if they are helpful. Also, I can record a video of my boot process.
    I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!

    Take a look at GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in /etc/default/grub.

    This is mine:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash enable_mtrr_cleanup raid=noautodetect"

    Does yours have the raid=noautodetect included? If it does not, try adding it. Save/close the file and then run:

    sudo update-grub2

    Shutdown and reboot.
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.
    Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

      hi,
      try what Snow suggests,

      and

      this is your main hard disk: ata1.00: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
      ata2 is something else,

      i dont think thats the problem

        Thank you for your reply!

        My "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in grub configuration was:
        GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
        so I changed it to:
        GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash enable_mtrr_cleanup raid=noautodetect"
        as you suggested.

        Still, my booting process takes up to two and a half minutes...

        This PC has only one hard disk drive. When I boot my PC I don't have any USB drives/External HDDs plugged in.
        What do you think ata2 is then...?

        My dmesg looks like this after I added raid=noautodetect in my grub config:

          You did run sudo update-grup2 after editing the file, yes?

          Post the contents of your /etc/fstab file and run sudo blkid and post the output as well.

            Yes, of course I did.
            /etc/fstab content is:

            matej@aspire-S3:~$ sudo cat /etc/fstab
            # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
            #
            # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
            # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
            # that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
            #
            # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
            # / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
            UUID=a0b954f8-c0ee-457e-9261-c60058029936 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
            # /boot was on /dev/sda1 during installation
            UUID=e25fcaa4-df34-4d10-8837-4bc691879e99 /boot ext4 defaults 0 2
            # swap was on /dev/sda2 during installation
            UUID=f6d8e24d-9613-4a62-9e01-786b49a8e70b none swap sw 0 0
            matej@aspire-S3:~$

            And it looks like I have some errors in fstab... What does this error mean? :S

            Output of sudo blkid command is:

            matej@aspire-S3:~$ sudo blkid
            /dev/sda1: UUID="e25fcaa4-df34-4d10-8837-4bc691879e99" TYPE="ext4"
            /dev/sda2: UUID="f6d8e24d-9613-4a62-9e01-786b49a8e70b" TYPE="swap"
            /dev/sda5: UUID="a0b954f8-c0ee-457e-9261-c60058029936" TYPE="ext4"

              The contents of your fstab file are fine. There are no errors. errors=remount-ro means that if errors are encountered with the system tries to mount the root partition, it will be mounted 'read only'.

              Change /etc/default/grub one more time and remove quite from:

              GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash enable_mtrr_cleanup raid=noautodetect"

              so it reads:

              GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash enable_mtrr_cleanup raid=noautodetect"

              Save and rerun sudo update-grub2 and logout and reboot.

              Removing quiet allows you to see the glory of the boot process, displaying the messages. Note which message is displayed at each point that you experience the delays.

                Ok, I don't know why, but removing "quiet" from grub configuration line didn't make any output while booting (and yes, I did save the file and update my grub2 after it )... Perhaps it is because one more line (that has quiet keyword in it) that I had to add because my brightness Fn keys were not working. Here is my /etc/default/grub file:

                matej@aspire-S3:~$ sudo cat /etc/default/grub
                [sudo] password for matej:
                # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
                # /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

                The bold lines were added. I found them here:
                https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireS3
                (Under "Making the screen brightness adjustable" section.)

                Should I remove the 'quiet' keyword from this line too to make boot process verbose?
                Thanks in advance!

                    Make the changes, rerun sudo update-grub2 and reboot. See if things don't improve, and you have screen brightness working.
                    I did everything you said.
                    Now the brightness is not working again.
                    Anyways... I could see the output while booting, but it got stuck on the part which I pointed out on the first post:

                    After this everything was very fast, just like before.

                      As to screen brightness control. Re-edit /etc/default/grub and on:

                      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic"

                      and add only one of the following:

                      pcie_aspm=force
                      i915.i915_enable_rc6=1
                      acpi_osi=Linux
                      acpi_backlight=vendor

                      Save and run sudo update-grub2, logout and reboot. Basically, you are going to run four configurations of /etc/default/grub to see which one gives you screen brightness control.

                      First configuration:

                      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic pcie_aspm=force"

                      Second configuration:

                      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic i915.i915_enable_rc6=1"

                      Third configuration:

                      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic acpi_osi=Linux"

                      Fourth configuration:

                      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic acpi_backlight=vendor"

                      The hanging delay at ata2.00: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) we'll try to resolve after you get /etc/default/grub configured properly.

                        The coding cited in this link isn't correct. If you don't want to go through my four-step testing of /etc/default/grub, then just edit the file and change:

                        GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic"

                        to:

                        GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noapic acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

                          Butting in, but google suggests you have a failing or un-powered peripheral, like a DVD/CD player. Have you considered this? I suggest unplugging completely any unnecessary device, to see if it affects the boot time.

                            Fourth configuration:

                            The fourth configuration worked.

                            Since the fourth configuration worked, I didn't try this one.
                            Should I try it anyway, or should I leave the working one?

                            Now... What can I do about my hanging delay mentioned above?
                            Thank you for your help, Snowhog!

                            Yes, I know that peripherals can affect boot time. I unplugged everything from my laptop - even a mouse.
                            Since this is a ultrabook it doesn't have CD-ROM, and I don't have any USB memory devices plugged in as I mentioned before.
                            But it's a good suggestion.
                            Thanks!

                              Just to mention...
                              As soon as I installed Kubuntu the boot process was very slow (3 minutes or so).
                              Afterwards I installed a indicator-cpufreq application (it clocks the CPU in runtime), but that didn't affect the boot time. Also, grub configuration was edited later on and even though it had some mistakes it still didn't make boot time slower.
