Online upgrade of an HP dv5000 from 12.04 to 14.04

    And it went very well!

My biggest concern was the BCM4311 wireless not being detected by Trusty, but even though the installation of firmware-b43-installer gave an error, it installed anyway and the wireless turned on automatically. Over 1,900 files were downloaded and installed. It took nearly two hours of download before the unpacking and installation began.

The only problem I am having is an interaction between the Logitec M325 USB mouse and the touch pad. On occasion the mouse's left button refused to work and I have to move the mouse over the control I want to activate and then press the left button on the touch pad. Then, the mouse starts working again for a while. Turning the touch pad off doesn't prevent the mouse's left button from failing, but it does prevent using the touch pad to circumvent the problem.

Other than that the 8 year old 32 bit laptop is performing flawlessly. It is reasonably fast. This is the first time that I took the online upgrade route to move a box from one version release to another and it was prompted by laziness and curiosity.

Out of curiosity, did you try changing the mouse?

      Yup.
I went into Input Devices --> Touch Pad, again, and then made sure every "off" button was pressed, not just the main one, and hit the apply button.
      So far, so good.
