Bet ya your indexing is slowing things down. Reduce your indexing to just your home account or subdirectories in it, or turn it off and install mlocate and use "updatedb" and "locate" in a console, along with grep and find."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

I always start by turning off Desktop Indexing in System Settings. I know - some people love that feature. I have no use for nepomuk or baloo or whatever it's called today. Turning it off should help some, and you can always turn it back on. Open a konsole and run top to see if anything is sucking up CPU or memoryThe next brick house on the left
