    USB audio - Issues with phonon

    Hi,

    I'm running Kubuntu Trusty amd64, and am having issues with Phonon (which I didn't have in previous releases).

    USB audio has never been a problem for me. I've been using an external Creative USB sound card (from now on, referred to as SC) as my default output since 13.04 (my laptop's on-board soundcard sucks....as they all do!), and had never encountered any issues until now.

    Since I installed 14.04 (fresh install), Phonon is proving kind of buggy. Half of the time it doesn't recognize my Ext. SC, regardless of which port I plug it into (USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. Usually, it worked on either one of them). I often have to unplug it and plug it back in up to 5-6 times until my system recognizes it. The issue is not the SC itself, as it worked flawlessly under Kubuntu 13.10 Live Session, as well as Chakra Fritz.

    Am just wondering if anyone else is having similar issues with phonon, whether this is a generalized problem in this release, or perhaps a buggy installation - and any possible workarounds there might be.

    Next time you have a problem, remove the sound card and open a console and run udevadm monitor. Re-insert the sound card. You should see some text scroll, which is the output of Udev detecting the card. If you don't see anything, then you have a more fundamental problem than a broken Phonon. Let us know.

      Of course, with udevadm-monitor on, it works flawlessly on thr first try...typical...

        Should I be worrying about hardware issues here? I'm not seeing any errors (then again, I'm not sure I'd know how to recognize them unless I saw them....unless they explicityly said "ERROR"). What do you reckon it might be? Should I be worrying about hardware issues?

            Hm. The Udev messages are the same, so no problem at that lower level.

            Next time, when Phonon doesn't detect the card, run the following commands:

            pulseaudio -k

            start-pulseaudio-x11

            start-pulseaudio-kde

            What happens?

              Following those instructions, word for word, nothing happened whatsoever. No changes.

              Executing the commands as superuser yielded the following:

              Code:
              $ sudo pulseaudio -k
E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to kill daemon: Success

$ sudo start-pulseaudio-x11
$ sudo start-pulseaudio-kde
Failure: Module initialization failed

                Don't use sudo here. PulseAudio runs within the context of the logged in user.

                Since running them without sudo didn't fix your problem, I'm not really sure where to go next. I've never had to futz with a USB sound device. Maybe Google?

                  Yeah...I see your point. So basically, the issue isn't system-wide device detection OR pulseaudio. What other modules/backends handle audio devices in Kubuntu Trusty? (Just so I have a vague idea of where to start looking...)
