backlight popup on desktop machine [no backlight]

I get what seems to be a backlight popup on my Kubuntu 14.04 desktop. It's annoying - and stupid - since it's not a laptop. How do I make this stop?

Inactivity. It first says 50%, then it says 0%, then the screen blanks. If I press a key when it says 50%, then it says 100% and the timeout resets.

In the System Settings utility, open the Power Management utility, and under the Energy Saving Settings section should(*) be a setting 'Dim Display'. If that box is checked, un-check it.

        * Still running 12.04 here at the moment, so the location of the setting under 14.04 might differ from what I see on my machine.
