    $ apt show gnome

    To see what that meta package will install.

      Mind helping us understand why? Mixing two desktop environments can occasionally have weird side effects.

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install gnome
        Should install everything for Gnome shell

          +1 on that

          I used to do this (install lots of desk top environments on the same install) back in the 8.XX-11.XX time frame ,,,and it wasn’t that big a problem.
          But around the 10.XX-11.XX time's it started causing , as @SteveRiley sead , lots of "weird side effects" .
          Especially with the big 2,,,,,,,, KDE and Gnome .

          How ever I do still add fluxbox for a backup DE as it is very light and unobtrusive

            I've avoiding doing that as well because of worry of weird side effects. I do have Nautilus only installed under Kubuntu because I thought I would miss it. The truth is Dolphin is great and I rarely run Nautilus. Nautilus works, but it does strange things. For example, when you click on an image, it pulls it up in Internet Explorer under WINE. I'll probably just uninstall it.
            Kubuntu 22.04 (desktop & laptop), Windows 7 &2K (via VirtualBox on desktop PC)

              Gnome, XFCE, Unity and CInnamon and Mate are similar enough that you can just try to pull in the desktop packages. they use a lot of the same packages (i.e. gedit, gksu, etc...) KDE is very different, and generally, if you are using KDE, it's because you like it and have left the gnome universe for good. That being said, around 12.10, I tried mixing Cinnamon and KDE on Linux Mint, which worked OK.However, the default Kubuntu installation is not quite identical to the kde packages in their stock format. Also Ubuntu-GNOME is heavily customized. I actually like Ubuntu-GNOME 14.04, and I would actually consider installing it or trying it out in a LiveCD. the Ubuntu-Gnome team have done an excellent job of customizing Gnome 3 to make it useable. The default Gnome desktop is actually not that nice. There's even a Gnome update PPA somewhere.

                There's an Ubuntu-GNOME again? I thought they abandoned GNOME in favor of Unity. Are they going back or just offering it as an alternative? Maybe it's an acknowledgement that Unity is awful. On the other hand, I do know people who like Unity.

                Btw, there is such a thing as Linux Mint/KDE. If for some reason I didn't use Kubuntu, that's probably what I would use.
