Muon Updater does not search & find updates

I know it was a problem at 13.10, by the way I used a workaround by installing Aper, updater from KPackageKit, alongside Muon Updater. Now, I thought, programmers had enough time to solve finally Muon Updater. But a week after installing 14.04 I hadn't seen an update notification yet. Only if for example Aptitude finds updates, Muon updater brings to life and shows them too.

Is it only my problem or it is common behaviour of Muon Updater these days? Does somebody know how to force Muon Updater to do what it is designed for?

I won't say it "is only your problem", but I have no problems what so ever with Muon.

Here, on my 64-bit and 32-bit 14.04, I have seven packages associated with Muon installed:

    muon
    muon-updater
    muon-discover
    libmuonprivate2
    muon-notifier
    muon-installer
    libdebconf-kde0
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I had the same problem. Open muon updater, click more (bottom left), configure muon updater, show notifications. Mine was unchecked for whatever reason after the update to 14.

Nice tip. While I don't depend on Muon to tell me anything; I do daily checks for updates from the CLI; I did check, and yes, the option was unchecked.

snowhog@ I have installed six of muon packages, now I added muon-installer, we shall see.
Teunis@ If I had problems with repositories so Aptitude and Muon Manager finds nothing too.
nathek@ My show notifications in Muon Updater was checked.
Thanks to all for trying to help.

On my netbook Acer with Apper installed alongside Muon Updater since 13.10 Muon Updater works, I think because Apper searches for updates even for Muon. The problem persists only on my Dell without Apper.

In Settings Software Sources was checked Download all updates in the background, I hope it is not the reason for showing and doing nothing.

I know I can solve this by installing Apper, but I wonder, if Kubuntu, which wants to be better than Windows is really after standard installation of the newest version without automatic updates. It is something similar like a few years ago, when Kubuntu was without network out of the box.

That would explain why you aren't notified; you've told the system to automatically download (and install I believe) any updates in the background; you won't be notified, it just does it.

Change it to Only notify about available updates and you will be notified.

If Muon Updater automatically installed software in the background so it was not possible, that I founded unupdated updates whenever I tried Aptitude or Muon Manager. Another behaviour is, that when I have the same option (Download all updates ....) checked on the netbook with Apper, Muon Updater shows notifications without installing automatically there.

I changed to Only notify about available updates and will see. Maybe it is no reasonable to use Download all updates in the background at all.

This is a long shot, as it is from a reported bug back in 2009, but it might be relevant for you.

Make sure the /etc/cron.daily/apt script is 'executable'. If it isn't, it can't run automatically. It, and every other script in /etc/cron.daily should have these attributes:

                -rwxr-xr-x

If any of the scripts don't reflect this, then from in that directory type:
                Code:
                sudo chmod +x *
There is a space after chmod and before the +x and a space after the x and *. This will make all the scripts in /etc/cron.daily executable.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

                  All scripts were executable.
Now I will watch new settings during some updates.
In fact I am not interesting in notifications about updates as I am tired of clicking do updates for seven years. I changed the settings deliberately to updates in the background and hoped that everything would go automatically as expected. In that state I would be glad to mark the thread as SOLVED.

muon-updater is broken here too (14.04 64 bit)
for example i run muon-updater and even click more >check for updates and it finds nothing
if i however open muon ( the synaptic like tool) click 'check for updates' it finds updates

I just run "check for updates" in muon package manager and it found updates but muon-updater didn't pop up to notify me about updates.

Then I run "sudo apt-get update" and notification about updates popped up in system tray:

                        Summary:

I payed an attention to Muon Updater on two computers with Kubuntu 14.04 for some time.

One computer had no problem after distro upgrade. I use it with Muon Manager > Settings > Software sources > Only notify about available updates.

Muon Updater on second computer did not work, but installation of Apper alongside Muon Updater immediately solved the problem even when I uninstaled it afterwards.

When Only notify ... works, it is possible to switch to Download all updates in the background. Activity is not visible and user can check what is going on only by updating package list - check for updates or by comparison of versions with other computer.

When a part of daily update is something with need of restart, for example kernel update, then Muon updater with Updates in the background option works the same as with Only notify... option.

I can't find muon-updater anywhere under Applications, but in System Settings > Service Manager > "Muon Application Notifier" was unchecked. I checked it and started the process.
