    A Tale of Two Upgrades

    1. I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 on my Lenovo Ideapad (netbook) S10-3s, and it went smoothly. Trusty is fast and faithful, like 13.10 was for me. The only problem so far is connecting my wireless. My connection icon has a question mark imposed on it. This was due, I found out, to not having the WEP password I use. When I type that in, it sometimes connects. The wireless security part of the connection seems to erase the password after it's used, and the next time I start internet I get the same thing. So far, that's the only glitch in a very smooth running system. The upgrade was made while the netbook was using an Ethernet connection, to avoid trouble.

    2. Happy that things had gone so well, I decided to upgrade my desktop, an i3 processor based computer, with4 gb of memory and a 500-gb HD. The result was anything but satisfactory. My computer now runs very slow, waiting eternities (by computer standards) to process a button click or load a program or open a program. Downloading, by the way, is not affected, and is about as 'fast' as it always was. With use, things seem to be getting a little better, but it's still too slow, especially in comparison with the netbook, which has only an Atom processor.

Can anyone tell me what might have happened, and how it could be fixed? I'm almost exclusively a Kubuntu user, and I'd hate to have to go to W7 just to get the speed up.

    1. What wifi chipset?
    2. The new search engine for KDE seems to have issues and this sounds like the same symptoms. See: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...o-shut-it-down

The problem seems to have resolved itself. The system monitor shows nothing eating up more than 1% of the RAM. Thanks for answering.
