Lost Internet connection: Diagnosis?

    Lost Internet connection: Diagnosis?

    Twice recently, I've lost my Internet connection. Can someone diagnose this?

    I.e., is the problem probably on the motherboard? the modem? or with 14.04 software or driver?

    Kubuntu 14.04
    Desktop PC, connected by Ethernet cable to the CenturyLink modem, Port #1.
    (Motherboard: DG33FBC LGA 775 Intel G33 ATX Intel Motherboard)

    Yesterday, I just noticed the problem--but I can't remember what I was doing at the time.

    This morning, the Internet connection was OK, then I took some updates from Muon, re-started the PC, and had the problem.

    Re-booting the PC does not fix it.

    --> I've fixed it both times by re-booting the modem (i.e., unplugging the power to the modem, waiting a minute, then re-connecting the power to the modem).

    When the problem occurs, the Notification message is:

    Wired Connection 1
    Connection 'Wired Connection 1' deactivated.

    Wired Interface (eth0)
    IP configuration unavailable

    More information:

    After posting this, I had another Muon update that required re-booting. Re-booting the PC did not cause any problems this time.

    When the problem occured (twice), all the lights on the modem were OK (Power, DSL, Internet, Port#1-ON, and wireless indicators).

      I guess you already checked the usual, the cable (swap it out) and do the lights on the Ethernet port, if there are any, blink as they should.

        The lights on the modem blink as they should.

        I did not swap out the Ethernet cable, I could do that, but if it were a bad cable, the light on the modem for the Ethernet Port would be off. Somehow, "IP configuration unavailable" is the key; but not being a network guy, I have no idea what this means (from a what-to-do perspective).

          I was wondering about the Ethernet port lights on the motherboard. I had a cable that was only halfway in the port (the latch thing was broken and it had become dislodged while cleaning) and the lights on the router looked normal but the MB lights were solid orange and the cable was loose. So long story short I had intermittent Internet until I discovered the issue and pushed the cable the whole way in again.

            Actually, I did also check the connection to the motherboard (where the Ethernet cable plugs into the back panel connector Ethernet slot).

              Check /var/log/syslog for more detailed information, and possibly a reason or clue what's wrong with the "IP configuration".

              One possibility is that you can't get an IP address from the modem's DHCP server. I had this problem with a previous cable modem, and often have it in hotels. Asking for a new IP address instead of renewing the currently leased one often helps:

              Code:
              $ dhclient -r -v wlan0
              $ dhclient -v wlan0
              Substitute eth0 or similar for wlan0.

                Check /var/log/syslog for more detailed information, and possibly a reason or clue what's wrong with the "IP configuration".
                To a non-expert, there's a lot there, many messages that look like clues, they all look the same after staring at it for some minutes, but bottom-line is that I wouldn't know what all those messages are trying to say. I may look at it again later. This problem just arose yesterday; system has run perfectly for years.

                  A summary of your problem: after downloading large amounts of data (as one might in an update), network connectivity disappears. The computer doesn't appear faulty, because the only way to fix the problem is to reboot the DSL modem.

                  Next time it happens, post your /var/log/syslog here. Let's take a look. Also, do you have more than one machine on your network? Can you ping that machine from this machine? Can that machine still reach the Internet?

                    Just one machine wired by Ethernet (I have a second machine, but looks like the motherboard is fried). There is a wireless laptop and wireless tablet available to turn on.
