Microphone volume wants to stay low

    Hello,

I am currently running Kubuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad X230T. According to lspci, my audio device is Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04).

I was trying to skype with a friend but he could barely hear me. I confirmed this by calling skype call testing service, and I could barely hear the test message I recorded, speaking at slightly louder than normal speech.

I opened up the audio mixer, and saw that the slider for the capture device volume was all the way at the bottom. I thought, "aha! problem solved!" and simply moved the slider all the way to the top. However, as I went back to skype to make another sound test call, right before my eyes the slider lowered itself all the way back down! I repeatedly raised the volume and watched it lower itself immediately back to near the bottom.

Can anyone tell me what is going on, and what I might do to fix this problem?

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about this issue?

This morning I updated my software, and as of now the capture devices do not appear at all in the KDE mixer, nor in my system settings.

Is there some way to fix this so that my microphone works properly?

How did you 'update' your software? What method?

I ran Muon Update Manager, and installed all the recommended system and security updates. It included updates/new versions of the linux headers, if I recall correctly.

Try opening a konsole and run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I ran both of those commands, rebooted as prompted, and also ran "sudo apt-get autoremove", but no change to the microphone issue.

I found this website and followed step 1A, and everything seems to be working for now.

My fingers are crossed that it stays fixed...

I am marking this one solved, as my microphone seems to be working normally now. If anyone else has this problem, try the link.
