CD/DVD drive/writer used to work and doesn't now

CD/DVD drive/writer used to work and doesn't now, and i am not sure how to diagnose it. it is labeled "LG", "Super Multi" and "SecurDisc" on the front... i'm running trusty, and i've used the CD/DVD writer with K3B in the past, so i know it has worked in the past, but now, for some unknown reason, it no longer works. i put a disk into the drive, and the drive whirrs, and the light flashes, but nothing ever shows up in Dolphin, or K3B... however, when i "right click" on the "NO MEDIUM PRESENT" label, in K3B, and select "Eject", the disk ejects, just like it is supposed to...

i'd appreciate any help i can get. thanks... 8)

same disk type as you used before ?

    like +R or -R

    what dose
    Code:
    sudo lshw
have to say about it's capabilities?

    VINNY
    i7 4core HT 8MB L3 2.9GHz
    16GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 860M 4GB RAM 1152 cuda cores

it doesn't matter if i'm putting a +R or -R disk, nothing shows up.

      Code:
      sudo lshw
gives me a huge amount of data.. hopefully some of it says something to someone...

A ya sorry I just wanted this part (should have been more specific )

        Code:
        *-cdrom
                     description: DVD-RAM writer
                     product: DVDRAM GH22NS50

                     bus info: scsi@2:0.0.0
                     logical name: /dev/cdrom
                     logical name: /dev/sr0
                     version: TN01
                     [COLOR=#ff0000]capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram[/COLOR]
                     configuration: ansiversion=5 [COLOR=#ff0000]status=nodisc[/COLOR]
dose this happen just with blank disks or disks with something on them as well

it happens with all disks, whether blank or already written...

which brings up another point, which i was going to save until after the drive works again, but now that the topic has been broached...

a while ago, maybe when kubuntu was at v.10 or v.11 or something like that... a few years ago... the way it worked was that, when i put in a CD or DVD, it would mount into /media/cdrom or /media/dvd and there would be a list of files and directories that i could navigate, and, in the case of audio CDs, there would be separate directories of .ogg files, and .mp3 files, and .wav files, and sometimes other directories of other files as well, and when i copied the files from that directory to my hard disk, i didn't have to "burn" the CD with K3B. i thought it was a highly enlightened way of approaching things.

then, about v.12 or so (maybe earlier), something changed, and instead of mounting at /media/cdrom it mounted at /media/something-or-another-else?gobbledy-gook-based-on-whatever-CD-i-inserted and, while it still had the nifty directories of different files, i was no longer able to simply copy them from the disk to my hard drive. it appeared to copy the files, but when the disk was no longer in the drive, my music player didn't know how to read them. if i wanted to transcribe the CD into a different format, i have to go through K3B...

is there any way to convince the computer to go back to the old way of doing things, or is this yet another method of making sure we don't do anything "unexpected" with the music we purchase on CD?

One thing to keep in mind is: These devices often fail.
They might look like they are OK, noise, light etc...
But they are cheap and disposable.

Can you boot a Kubuntu or other Linux Live CD/DVD?

If you have Windows - Does it work there?

the probability that the device has failed has crossed my mind, and is not totally ruled out yet, but at this point i think it is good to assume that it is working until it can be conclusively shown that it is not.

no, regardless of whether the disk is already written on, or whether it is blank, nothing happens on the computer, other than, when the disk is inserted, the drive whirrs and the light on the front flashes. nothing shows up in Dolphin, and nothing shows up in K3B.

ick... why would anybody have windoes'nt? bleah... 8P

i have a mac, however, and the disks (whether blank or already written) work perfectly well there, although they don't mount the way i want them to there, either...

Then IMO, you need a new optical drive
If it's a Box, not a Laptop. You could double check the cables and re-seat them at each end, but I still go by my first instinct.

I'd like to second that, as "worth a try".

                      <!-- SNIP -->

actually, my original comment included the mount points: "... it would mount into /media/cdrom or /media/dvd ... then, about v.12 or so (maybe earlier), something changed... it mounted at /media/something-or-another-else?gobbledy-gook-based-on-whatever-CD-i-inserted"

and, as i discovered when i finally got around to replacing my drive (which was the original problem), i discovered that, indeed, instead of mounting at /media/cdrom the disk now mounts at audiocd:/?device=/dev/sr0

so at least that part of my observation was correct...

so why is it no longer mounting at /media/cdrom? is there any reason why i should want it to do that by default? it seemed to make a lot more sense to me, especially when, if it's a data CD, it does mount at /media/cdrom (or /media/the-name-of-the-disk )... ?

that partially answers my question, but it doesn't negate the fact that i see what appears to be a file system, with directories for real files which are already .mp3 or .ogg or .flac files, as you can see by looking at the attachment on my previous message. and when i copy those files from the audio CD to my music collection, they copy as .mp3 or .ogg or .flac files, which would make me assume that they're "real" files...
