Dist-upgrade lowers screen resolution

I have always used a 1920x(whatever, I forget) screen resolution. But since a dist-upgrade yesterday, I cannot get anything above 1600x1200 in System settings > Display configuration.

I am using the standard (nouveau) driver, not the nvidia.

How do I get back my 1920?

Problem "fixed", but why?

Checked the driver manager. Turns out the dist-upgrade had installed the nvidia driver! I reverted to nouveau, rebooted and i'm back to 1920x1200.

So why did dist-upgrade change the driver? And why does the nvidia driver suddently refuse the higher resolution?
