Printer/scanner works in Ubuntu but not Kubuntu [14.04 64bit]

Okay so I am unsure what standard ubuntu has that Kubuntu doesnt but I havb e never been able to get my printer/scanner to work under Kubuntu 14.04 64bit LTS.
I have a HP Envy 4200 that works overall but in Ubuntu, not its KDE cdounterpart thus why i am using Ubuntu instead.
Now I could install kde desktop to fix this issue as I really dont want to be using unity here soon as it will be a mess by 16.04 but I should not have to.
Can somesone help me solve this printer/scanner mystery?
I mean i did what I was supposed to, install HPLIP and its gui but it doesnt seem to detect the printer scanner unless I hook it up via USB something else I should not have to do.
This is a wireless scanner after all.

Hi, I have the HP 6600 which is a wireless also, and I use the usb because it seems to be faster for me.

However, given that, there was a similar post elsewhere about a scanner/printer not working wireless and I gently suggested that possibly it was in the setup on the printer itself, mine has a doofy little screen with soft press menu to do stuff and possibly a wrong menu item on the device was pressed or not enough time was taken to get it to gets it's act together.

Here is the "solved" post the problem being in CUPS.

    https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...ut-won-t-print

But also, you say "never been able to get it to work"...could you be more explicit about just what is happening...like does the computer see the machine and it "prints" but does not go to the printer..is is possibly somehow defaulting to print to file?

Also I had a cd that I had to put into the computer to get the drivers enabled, but that was with a HP6600 so it may not apply in your case.

just some thoughts and I'm sure that someone more expert will be by in a short while.

When I say it doesnt work it doesnt work, meaning its not detected.
In Ubuntu I can work it just fine but not in Kubuntu.
Is KDE just stupid with printers or something, I installed all that I need including HPLIP and Xsane but nothing works.
I tried restarting too, diddly squat.

Well this is definately not working, while I can install the printer via systemsettings in KDE I cant get the scanner to work.
What kind of voodoo magic do I have to do to get this working, I am driven up the wall here.

Something tells me I have to use standard ubuntu again here, I cannot for the life of me figure this out.
Sigh, here goes dumb Mir worries again.
Maybe in two years Kubuntu you will actually work, one can hope.

OK I think that I figured this out.

            a) you have to do all of the "stuff" for setting the wireless up, using the hp disk so that it sets up the hp printer box, and set it up using the "temporary usb" option.

I assume that you have done that.

            b) you have to do the setup on the printer itself yada yada, you will have to set up wifi, entering the password for the router, etc.

You will have to do the reset on the wireless, holding the button for 3 seconds, etc.

I assume that you have done that.

            c) do what GG said, tick the share button.

            d) Ok I FORGOT THIS.... so I APOLOGIZE....for that, sad emoticon thingy here.

There are TWO HP cups drivers for the 6600 ..... one of them the "normal" and one the wireless, it is not labled such.

            Install that driver ALSO...

you will see two "printers" in the printers in settings.

            MY PARTICULAR ONES...

            "Officejet_6600" that is the usb

            "HP_Officejet_6600" that is the wireless,

In the "configure" button you will see a connection such as:

            socket://###.###.#.#:####

When this is all done, the printing will happen immediately upon hitting the print button, at least it so does for moi!

hplip is for printers, scanners are totally different. Now, as Kubuntu uses the same exact bits for scanners as Ubuntu under the hood, it should be easy to figure out what is wrong here.

First, what is the make and model of the wireless printer/scanner?
Next, what were the exact steps you used when using your scanner wirelessly in Ubuntu, as in what software or program you used to scan with and how you told it where and what the scanner was (if you had to do so).

See if there is any output from the command:
scanimage -L ..this may take some small amount of time.

Just as a long shot... I helped a friend set up his printer in a Kubuntu reinstall, after he'd failed a few times. He told me that my key input (as in idea, or instruction) was to tell him to choose "ethernet" rather than "wireless" on some set up dialogue. Seems to remove some complexity. I fix the printer's LAN IP address, too, outside the range the router hands out.

I think there is a little confusion here. Is it safe to assume that the printer is working? and that the scanner is NOT?

Again, the model of your device might help us.

                    On MY particular system:

If one sets things up for wireless and then tries to "scan" using GIMP in the acquire device menu, GIMP will display the wireless "driver" not the device, and the wireless driver will not see the scanner, as such.

To use the scan function in GIMP one has to have usb set up, at least on my machine, and default to the DRIVER for usb and then it will scan.

So, maybe at least some of this is apples and oranges, don't know, just a thought.

If one never uses the scan function then one would never NOTICE that "the driver" is what is being seen by different apps not the "machine" itself.

AS AN ASIDE...even using the cd, Kubu has not been able to recognize the FAX function on the machine, or possibly I just don't know how to set it up, but since I don't fax don't need to so do.

                      Open a terminal and type

                      hp-doctor

Try to apply the suggested fixes.

                      Then run

                      hp-setup
