Been using 14.04 for a while. All o.k. except disc burning and music playing applications. None of them will access the dvd/cd drive in my desktop. It works o.k. when I boot it up in windows, but can't get it right in Kubuntu. Any suggestions?

Does your Kubuntu detect the cdrom - what is the command:
Code:inxi -d
Code:sudo lshw -C disk
Does the information seem to be correct ?
Is the 'KDE System Settings > Multimedia > Specify CD Device' info correct ?
What is the error messge if you launch the disc burning or music playing application from the konsole.
At here:
Code::~$ inxi -d Optical: /dev/sr0 model: N/A dev-links: cdrom Features: speed: 12x multisession: yes audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram
Code::~$ sudo lshw -C disk *-cdrom description: DVD-RAM writer product: DVDRAM GH22NS90 vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 0.0.0 bus info: scsi@4:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/sr0 version: HN00 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

Thanks for the response. With a music CD in the drive, attempting to play it results in a message that the cd drive in not mountable.
Here is wat Konsole shows:
*-cdrom
description: DVD-RAM writer
product: DVD A DH16ABSH
vendor: ATAPI
physical id: 0.0.0
bus info: scsi@2:0.0.0
logical name: /dev/cdrom
logical name: /dev/sr0
version: YA12
capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
configuration: ansiversion=5 status=ready
*-medium
physical id: 0
logical name: /dev/cdrom
In system settings, it looks right.

I have a similar problem. I have two HD's one SCSI which the sytem is on and an IDE which is also the same cable as the DVD. The DVD worked for system install. I think Kubuntu 14.04 is falling to mount them. Dophine can't ssee the DVD and Say the secound HD is removable and cannot acess it says 0 bytes.
This dosn't make sence:
Code:steve7233@steve7233-EP45-UD3P:~$ inxi -d Drives: HDD Total Size: 200.0GB (86.6% used) 1: id: /dev/sda model: ST3200822AS size: 200.0GB Optical: No optical drives detected.
