Nvidia Recommended Driver 331.38 not working after update 13.10->14-04

Hi folks,

i have just updated my wifes pc from Kubuntu 13.10 to 14.04.
Update was successfull, except Nvidiadrivers.
If i choose Recommended Driver 331.38 from Additional Drivers i end up with a black screen and cursor blinking.

Dmesg

NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x12:0x2b:1877)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed for device bearing minor number 0
NVRM: nvidia_frontend_open: minor 0, module->open() failed, error -5

apt-get install nvidia-current works.
NV 304 is running, except steam whining about glx errors and no hibernate/standby.

I have no idea what to do now. Would be nice if someone could show me the direction.

If your nvidia card is a 8400GS, it's not supported by the newest drivers, despite what nvidia says. You'll have to stay with 304, but it's not like 304 is crippled or anything.

Anyway, problem is solved.

Found something like this in Xorg.0.log
NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA kernel module does not appear to
(EE) NVIDIA(0): be receiving interrupts generated by the NVIDIA graphics
(EE) NVIDIA(0): device PCI. Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS

It's an SLI board, changed slot, 331 is up and running.

hm, why is 304 NOT complaining about the IRQ?

That's weird, but glad you solved it. Video issues can be a PITA. The slot vs. slot is a new one on me.
