I'm seeing this with one trusty machine but not on another with the same pdf.
I don't think the XRandr debug message is relevant, though, as I get that even with the machine that shows the pdf correctly.
One thing I noticed is that when I choose File>Properties in okular after opening the file, the machine that does not show the pdf reports paper size as nan x nan, and the one that works reports paper size as A4...show this could be a problem with locale paper settings.
I haven't figured out the delta between the two machines yet (I'll probably get a diff of installed packages and locale settings later).

A couple of things:
1.Check /etc/papersize . In the US it should have one word - letter . I guess elsewhere it should be A4 .
2. Can you open your pdf files with something else such as evince, xpdf, ghostview, gimp, libreoffice, etc?
3. Check your pdf files with pdfinfo and see what paper size it is reporting.
Trying to determine whether this is a okular problem or a more general problem with how the system is handling pdf files. Works fine here.We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. -- Stephen Hawking

1. /etc/papersize is correct and same on both machines (the one that works and the one that doesn't), although I'm under the impression kde software doesn't check /etc/papersize (because kde has the locale setting for papersize)
2. xpdf shows the pdf fine, so does print preview in okular.
3. pdfinfo checks out as well.
Other things I've checked:
4. On the machine that doesn't show the pdf, the "bug" is also present with a new user (so should not be a problem with user settings)
5. Tried with other pdfs, same results (so not a problem with a particular file)
6. The delta between the packages installed on both machines is very small (and nothing that *should* be relevant)
No useful console messages either, although I haven't yet tried with all debug messages enabled (I'll probably do that once I get the chance)

Just wild guesses at this point, but:
When okular hangs are you going to 100% on some process? Check with htop or the CTL-ESC system monitor running while you run okular.
Edit: Might also check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. -- Stephen Hawking

/var/log/Xorg.0.log logs Xserver startup, not the errors from user's Xsession.
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, at this point I'll welcome any suggestions (even the outside-the-box ones)...I'm not really in a hurry to solve this, as I can access pdfs on other machines or with other software...but the issue is really mind-boggling...which is of course part of the fun .Last edited by kubicle; Apr 10, 2014, 10:23 AM.
