Thunderbird stopped working after update to v24.x

Since updating to Thunderbird 24.2.0, I'm getting this message from Account Settings -> Server settings:

The Local Directory path "/home/***/.thunderbird/***.default/Mail/mail.***" is not suitable for message storage. Please choose another directory.

And worse, it's not downloading my mail.

Anyone else? I'm seeing a lot of discussion of this on Windows but nothing on Linux, and so far none of the proposed fixes are working for me.

UPDATE: Never mind: something weird in the prefs.js
I copied over an old prefs.js and it's working.

    Ah, spoke to soon.
    The error is back...
Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?

Mine is working fine (24.2.0 on Kubuntu 13.10). Do you have enough space in your home folder? Could it have changed the permissions in there between updates?
