Help with flash issues Please

Hello everyone, I have just registered here and this is my #1 post so please be gentle. A few days ago I installed Kubuntu 13.10 on my Compaq D510 USDT with P4 1.9ghz and 1gig of ram, yes I know it's very old. Unbeleiveably Kubuntu is fast and smooth on it. The only problem I have is trying to play flash videos on youtube and other sites without html5, the video displays like it's cut in half and completely discolored. I have searched this for a few days before deciding to ask here. I have tried creating an xorg.conf and putting values in that others have used to solve this problem, but then I only boot to a black screen and then have to use recovery to delete that file. I am a totally new linux user as well. Also let me add that I have an Intel 82845g (Brookdale) integrated graphics device and I'm guessing this is my problem. What I need is somebody to either walk me through how to figure out what I need to put in the xorg.conf file if that is my problem or maybe some other advice on how to fix this. I've already completely removed flash and reinstalled it a few times. I was going to install an older version but I'm not able to figure out how. I really really like this Kubuntu and want to use it as my primary OS, but this flash is somewhat of a killer. I can copy the url of the flash and network stream it with VLC, but really would like to watch video on the webpage. I know this is probably not enough information and I apologize if this is not in the right place. I just need some help figuring this out. If you need more info please tell me how I can get it, as I am not very smart with this. Thanks everybody. Really appreciate any suggestions. Maybe my old graphics card just will not work with flash in kubuntu? Oh and this happens in Firefox and Rekonq

Well, according to Intel, Brookdale-G is supported by their driver, so at least we know that.

Please let us know what you've tried in xorg.conf. Oh, and welcome to KFN.

I have Dell GX270 computers, also using this Intel 82845g (Brookdale) integrated graphic card. Because they are a little more powerful than your Compaq, they can bear youtube videos, but the image is not so good and you can't really use the PC for other operations at the same time...

My advice : try to find a cheap but more powerful graphic card for your motherboard. I would recommend Nvidia models. You could also get a more powerful CPU for less than 5 euros or dollars (on ebay or whatever) and maybe more DDR.
I'm pretty sure you could have a 2.8 GHz P4 + 1 Gb DDR + correct Nividia card for about 20/25 euros at most... I would do that.

SteveRiley this sucks, I can not seem to find what forum I got those values from as I didn't right them down. I am glad to know the video card is supported though. If you have any ideas on what to put in there I would love to try them.

DWAM_GDL- what makes this Compaq even worse is it's the Ultra Slim Desktop Model and doesn't have anywhere i could put another video card..

I have recentley upgraded the ram from 256mb to 1gb.. do you think I should have both slots filled even though they are different sizes? I've read that mismatching them could lead to problems and I was having problems with blue screens in windows 7.. so I took out the 256mb card. Did not notice any difference and it did not fix my problem. I think I'll put it back in tho, unless you guys think it wouldn't be a good idea.

If both DDR share the same specs (type, frequency, voltage, etc...) it can work. It won't change your situation anyway: 1Gb is enough for a small kubuntu desktop. I think you need more CPU and a better graphic card first.

I'm checking this D510 model. I did not realize at first it is the Ultra Slim. Yes obviously you cannot replace the graphics card. Sorry...

The specs page indicates clearly what type of DDR and CPU are supported, but if you consider YouTube a high priority, maybe this PC won't help, even if you replace some parts.

I would make it a "light client" to access remotely to other machines with various protocols like RDP, XDMCP, VNC, etc... If you don't need that, consider Lubuntu. Give it a try...

PS : Did you try YouTube videos with Google Chrome, Chromium or Firefox ? I did not try myself, but I read that only Google Chrome browser support the latest Flash plugin.

Thanks for the advice and your correct DWAM chrome does work, however the videos were choppy.. I went back to Win XP for the time being (videos still choppy in this old pc). I ordered an Hp dc7900 for cheap off ebay, so when it gets here I'm going to try Kubuntu again. It has a e8400 core 2 duo and 2 gigs of ram. Will that let me watch streaming video ok? What do you think. Thanks for the advice man. Oh and its got Intel integrated graphics as well.. I think Q45 chipset if I'm not mistaken.

I guess you'll have no problem watching videos with this "new" PC. I don't know which version you're talking about (desktop, sff, ultra slim?) but anyway even the ultra slim (with the internal graphic card Intel GMA 4500) is more than enough ! Have fun !

It's the convertible mini tower. there is no way i'd get another ultra slim lol. I know its not new, but it has got room for another video card and such. I'd say its probably 20 times better than what I'm currently using... Thanks for the input guys. Happy holidays!
