special effects no longer working after update

First i got this error when trying to do the updates:
    http://ubuntuone.com/4vRN5IvOnkfZM7OJ1jiYsj

muon lost it's menu. so i used the new muon discover to do the updates.

after it finished i restarted and immediatelly i saw something strange. didn't know what it was but i thought i had to log in two times. and the desktop looked slightly different.

so i went in again did some digging and found out that effects are off. i got a message that kwin crahsed when using 3D effects. ok i reenabled them and it crashed again. tried with different settings - same thing.

what kind of safe updates are these that crash the desktop?

    Kubuntu 13.10
AMD proprietary drivers. at least they should be but now i can't get glxgears to work.

    fglrxinfo

OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics
OpenGL version string: 4.2.12337 Compatibility Profile Context 9.01

it doesn't seem like additional drivers applicaiton is working anymore (after update). in the end i first lost amd catalyst contorl center (they were simply cone) and then any drivers for the desktop (por they were in limbo. i had to run

    sudo dpkg --configure -a

and then i reinstalled the drivers from command line using ubuntu binnary driver how to (since i couldn't get to desktop). i finnally have it working like before. i only use a few effects but those really do make life easier).

i didn't check the muon part yet. i will see if removing the co nfig file helps. i actually don't mind using the new version or commnd line as long as the whole thing works as it should.

in the middle of all this i got a prompt for new Kubuntu being available (uprade pormpt). clickiing it wanted to do a release upgrade. i wonder to what release? since i didn't continue after password prompt. it stramghe these thing happened since i am using stock kubuntu (aside from AMD drivers). no PPA's yet. though it was upgraded but i've been using it for quite some time since a smooth upgrade and didn't get any errors or anything before now.

well after reinstalling the proprietary drivers that message was gone. i will see if it reappears. If it gives me too much troubles i will do a clean reinstall.

funny though there are or there were no error messages about anything. not after upgrade not after first and all other updates. not even after the last update via new muon. I did the upgrade using wired internet and with charger plugged in. but sometimes i update using wireless.

I just did a new install of 13.10 on a separate machine. Everything was fine then updates came and I installed the ATI driver from Muon (as indicated earlier, Jockey appears to be broken for ATI atm). Now the driver is working but effects in KWin are not. Only the notification that #D effects had crashed int he past - although as I said it is a new install. My guess is that an update broke KWin effects for ATI users, but I haven't dug deep into it at all.
