[37161.540202] kernal panic - not syncing: attempt to kill init! Exit code 0x00000007
    [37161.540202]
[37161.540299] drm_kms_helper: Switching back to text console
Caps lock started flashing and sound stuck in loop and frozen system.I had to hold in power button until computer died. I restarted and came here to post.
I was using Virtual Box to run Windows Vista 32 bit and media player to play Civilization IV sound track. Also running IE in VM.

    HP dv6 multimedia notebook PC
    Intel GMA 45

If you need more info. just ask. I have never seen Kubutu get this bad in all my years of using it. I hope its not Linux. Maybe Windows?
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

I wonder if I should file a bug report on launch pad. Maybe the Linux kernal or the Ubuntu, devs. should see this since its a Kernal panic.

This looks like a video memory issue. drm refers to memory and kms refers to kernel mode setting of video resolution (I think!).

I'd start by looking at your video driver and settings. It's possible you simply ran out of video RAM and the kernel puked. There might be a way to share some RAM with the video or use more efficient settings from your use. Based on the workload you were pushing at the time this wouldn't surprise me.

DRM: direct rendering manager -- kernel module that allows userspace programs to access the video hardware directly.

@steve7233: can you reliably duplicate this problem?

No. I switched to Intel's generic Linux driver and haven't seen the problem since. Maybe my hardware doesn’t like the Ubuntu video driver for some reason. Intel GMA 45.
