touchpad suddenly stopped working at same time as network management

Had a really bad breakdown yesterday

    was doing my normal stuff
all of a sudden touchpad stops working
which it does occasionally and a reboot normally fixes it

then noticed im disconnected from network and none are available wireless (but i can deal with that with ethernet cable)

so after screwing the machne up trying to fix it
I reinstalled 13.10 twice, still same issues

    am now using 13.04

but still do not have this solved
it is either broken hardware or a config file somewere in the /home partition
so if anybody could point me to a trackpad config file in the /home folder I would be most appreciative
or maybe its a driver issue

Touchpad is recognised in hardware i think

Same issue after installing 13.10 twice and 13.14 once?
Is your machine fast enough to run a LiveCD as a check?
(Same symptom after 3 installs looks like you have hardware problems.)

      Dear all,

I updated my system two days ago and have the same problems!

No touchpad - the sytem settings dialog only says "No touchpad found in this system. If the system has a touchpad, please make sure that the synaptics driver is properly installed and configured." An external USB mouse works.

No wlan - lspci lists "02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (rev c4)". But all tools only see the wired net (eth0). Unfortunately I have no wired internet connection.

The default kernel is 3.11.0-13-generic. I tried to boot an older kernel (3.5) but the problems remain.

      Thank you for any help/hints.

Edit: after issuing a "sudo modprobe iwlwifi" command, the wireless starts working again. Hopefully an update will fix the problem(s)!

Edit2: issued "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" and everything works again! Must have been an incomplete update or something...
