I don't think you'll find many Ubuntu/Kubuntu developers here. Launchpad is the place to report bugs.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/963736 may be the bug you are experiencing.

I solved the problem by going back to kubuntu 12.04! THE BEST! hope 13.10 will be better.

That's not a solution. That's more of a work around.

But I do share your pain. There are a number of outstanding problems relating to running non-KDE applications in Kubuntu 13.04 that have yet to be fixed. Bugs #963736 and #1142213 seem to be confirmed by so many but have yet to be acknowledged by the Ubuntu/Kubuntu developers.

However, I see that there is a fix in Debian for bug #1142213 so that should filter through to Ubuntu/Kubuntu in due course.

An apparent fix -- gtk-engines-oxygen 1.3.3 -- is in the Saucy repos, and a deb for Raring 64bit is posted in a comment in the 963736. Several people report it fixed the problem. It did for me. Several days now with no Firefox or Thunderbird freezes on Raring.

Yesterday I used Firefox for hours and no gray window! yay. Maybe not a coincidence that I received a ton of KDE updates as well (4.10.2 => 4.10.3)

I'm still seeing these firefox and thunderbird freezes. Several times a day since moving from 12.04 to 13.04

              kde: v 4.10.3
              Firefox: v 21
              TB: 17.0.6

              I have gtk2-engines-oxygen 1.3.1 and gtk3-engines-oxygen 1.1.1 installed.
Is v 1.3.3 in the repositories somewhere? I don't see it.

EDIT: Just got the deb from the link posted above
