Yes, recall it was not booting to a GUI without it. It was booting to a blank screen, no cursor and CTRLAlt F2 had no affect.

It will be a terrible thing to live with because with vesa you get no graphics acceleration at all.
I am on the bus to a performance now so I'm flying by memory. I would like you to try something. Edit the file /etc/default/grub. There are two LINUX_CMD lines. One will have "quiet splash" or something similar, the other won't. Remove the two words in quotes but leave the quotes. Make sure there are no other parameters. A bit farther down is a commented line with TEXT_MODE or similar. Remove the comment symbol. Save the file and exit the editor. Now run update-grub. When it's done, reboot. Now you will see some scrolling boot text. After that, do you finally see a graphical desktop?Comment

It looks like this laptop came with Windows 8. I'm assuming it can use either legacy or uefi boot from the BIOS.
I don't see Windows 8 installed, and I'm wondering if you have legacy set in the BIOS, since I don't see a "/boot" partition, I would assume legacy.
You would have to research how to select either, since I don't own an uefi computer.

I want to see if you can successfully boot to a command prompt at least. Please make the above-mentioned change to /etc/default/grub. Next, please run:
I am assuming here that you are still using the default display manager, LightDM. If you switched to KDM, replace lightdm in the above with kdm.Code:echo "manual" | sudo tee /etc/init/lightdm.override
Now restart. Can you boot to a text mode login? If so, please log in. Then run:
If that works, log out. Back at the command prompt, run:Code:startx
Again, replace lightdm with kdm if you are using KDM.Code:sudo service lightdm start
