Great advice Teunis - back into my GUI now, I decided to document the process in case it didn't work then i could tell you what i did and you could tell me where i went wrong, since it worked here it is anyway - another 1 reply fix for the kubuntu forums, great community we have here - who needs canonical anyway (-:

started PC | command prompt comes up | log in

    type (start x)

get errors about the nvidia driver

    type (jockey-text --list)

    type (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current)

    enter sudo password

nvidia drivers appear to download, get matrix of downloading text, prompt appears again

    type (sudo reboot)

fixed (-; thanks to the 41 people who looked and thanks for the reply
