Screen is really dim [dark] on fresh install of 13.04

I have just done a fresh install of 13.04 and all of a sudden the screen is really dim/dark? I cannot find the brightness adjustment and the keys on my HP G42 are not working?

What happened to cause this? It started on the USB live session, but I didnt change any settings. Everything was find before going to the USB live session.

Does this show how dark it is? I can barely see the screen.

I found the adjustment under the battery in the display bar.
