Package manager history shows the following for yesterday. Note the timestamp. I did this just before leaving the office for the day. After reboot I had the usual login screen. I left it there:

This morning on login, I saw what the attached image shows (taken with iPhone).
That, of course, is completely useless. Note that some on-boot apps loaded and their primary window content displayed but the window decorations were not displayed correctly. I think plasma was somehow hosed, but DIIK how that should happen when so few updates were installed and none of them seem relevant to what I see. Restarting KDM and logging in with Kubutu-Failsafe shows same problem. Installing OpenBox and restarting KDM and logging in with Kubuntu-OpenBox shows the same thing. Kubuntu is effectively useless right now. Crtl-Alt-F1 got a terminal and I was able to install XFCE and that's what I'm using right now.
Short of nuking the .kde directory does anyone have any clue where I should look or how to t-shoot this? I can fiddle with files from XFCE but cannot do anything from a kubuntu login at all.
Thanks.
