Hitting any key in Konsole crashes KDE and X

Don't remember if this happened due to the upgrade to 13.04 or a recent update to 12 before upgrade to 13.04.

Everything comes up just fine all the way to the greeter screen. Logging on works just fine too, and all comes up as it should on the desktop.

I can run applications using the run box and no issues with the keyboard.

Everything is updated and no issues with dpkg --configure -a. apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade complete with no errors.

When I start a Konsole window, that comes up too.

Hitting any key in that Konsole window dumps me back to the greeter screen. I am assuming that X restarts.

All virtual consoles and SSH access work just fine, but the GUI is useless to me.

    No real help in Xorg.0.log.

    ~/.xsession-errors shows:
kded4: Fatal IO error: client killed

akonadi_archivemail_agent: Fatal IO error: client killed

    ... etc...

I have been searching all over and can't find anything about this so this must either be some obscure bug that no one else has reported or I have some library file corrupted or some configuration file has the wrong info.

Any insight would be most appreciated.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

I forgot to mention that I did, in fact, move aside the .kde directory and no effect. Hitting the first key in Konsole crashes X.

By Ctrl-Alt-F4, are you saying a virtual console? Those work just fine.

It looks like it is a general keyboard problem with KDE itself. Xterm also crashes as well as trying to enter anything in the run application box from the K menu. This is new, and wasn't happening before. Before, it was just Konsole in the GUI that crashes everything.

Are you suggesting that I bring this to the KDE forums? Is there anything more I can do to try to track this down?

    TIA

Ok, this is getting bad. There was a huge KDE update for Kubuntu that I did this morning. Now, hitting a key when the focus is in the application "Search" box at the top of the "K" menu also now crashes KDE/X but now with this segfault (in /var/log/kdm.log):

Sometimes, now I get this instead:

        /var/log/kern.log gives this as a one-liner:
