    Shutdown issues - kernel panic

I did a fresh install from DVD of 13.04 on my HP tower-i7-8Gb-500Gb GForce-210 dual-screen system. All seemed well until I did a shutdown. It stopped with a kernel panic - no more memory, and would not restart. I had to go back to the DVD and re-install. Since then I have had three shutdowns fail. Following re-starts (hold the power button down and then power-on start) I ended at a character based GRUB menu. One was a repeat kernel panic that I was able to recover from just by executing option 1 on the GRUB panel. The other two got to a character screen of messages and stopped at a WILL NOW SHUTDOWN message and sat there. Once agian, the power button was required. In one case I got the GRUB character screen again and in the others I got a normal graphic screens start. Is anyone else having shutdown issues?
