    Kubuntu 64 crash after install

Fresh install of Kubuntu 13.04 64amd, but crashes soon after login. Crash means a black screen, sometimes the mouse pointer responds, sometimes not. Sometimes there is a screen full of static white text, sometimes just black. Sometimes it is possible to ctrl-alt F1 to a tty, sometimes not. The crash seems to happen at random a few minutes after log in.
On one occasion, Nvidia driver 313 was activated, but system crashed when shutting down to reboot.
Tried reinstall using different USB stick, but same result. iso file was downloaded with bittorrent, and md5sum checks out.
On login, the bar at the bottom of the screen is always empty, except for the 3 dots button of the Show Activity Manager.

Hardware is a desktop, a few years old, and it has run earlier versions of Kubuntu 64 ok.
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad, 4GB RAM
    GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX580

    TIA

    Peter

    After installing then run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
    Reboot then run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current
    sudo apt-get install linux-source
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
    sudo apt-get install linux-image
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
    Reboot and report back.

Hey, I have a GTX550 and I'm experiencing similar crashes (not always). I think it's related to Nvidia's HDMI audio. Can you post your dmesg after a crash?

Thanks for your reply. Crashes haven't happened since following those steps.

Basically, dist-upgrade and kubuntu-desktop said packages were already at newest, so nothing to be done.
purge nvidia-current said it wasn't installed.
          install nvidia-current installed version 304

So, no crashes after an hour or so of running, which is a great improvement.

I'm not sure everything is completely ok, as the panel at the bottom of the screen is empty. I have added widgets, just the basic ones that were there by default in quantal.
Also, when trying to install google chrome (deb from google.com), QApt says it can't satisfy dependencies.

But at least the system is running now!

            Hi
I haven't recorded dmesg from any of the crashes, but could search back through logs if it would help. (Although, I'm not sure if I can post the code here, as the forum software wouldn't let me use CODE tags in my earlier reply in this thread.)
But I could do a grep on dmesg logs. What info are you after?

There are 6 dmesg files in /var/log, but only the oldest one has that string in it.

                Code:
                $ grep patch_generic_hdmi dmesg.4

I have updated everything, and still it crashes at the splash screen sometimes.

                  I have tried nvidia 304, 310 and 313, but it's the same.

Does your hdmi audio from the Nvidia card work? Is it detected by Phonon?

Sorry, I'm not using the hdmi output. Just running 2 screens on dvi cables on that graphics card. Audio is on the mother board.

Don't install like that. It should usually work but a few people have mentioned issues. You could always install chromium from the repos but anyways instead run
                      Code:
                      sudo dpkg -i <deb name>
. An easy way to do this is navigate to the folder where the deb is saved, hit F4 and just enter that cmmand in the konsole that pops up at the bottom.

ok. I've not had any trouble installing using QApt on downloaded deb files (although I have only done it for Chrome and Gramps). But, I'll give chromium from the repos a try and see how it goes.

QApt usually works great but people always complain that it fails on Chrome. Search the forums, its a reoccurring theme but what makes so little sense is that there is no reason for the issues.

After updating kubuntu 12.10==> 13.04, I have exactly the same problem. White screen!
                            Impossible to access something.
I use kubuntu since 2008, I use to upgrade it after each new distribution, this is the first time I see a such mess. What should I do ? Any Commands line ?
Have you a solution please ?

                            Regards.
