    Portable DVD writer no longer works with Kubuntu 13.04

    I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 Beta.
    My LG External DVD writer is no longer recognized by the system.
    I am on an Asus Ultra book (Zen Book Prime Touch) .

    What info do you need off my system to diagnose this problem?

    Have you ruled out hardware failure?* Just in case the fact that you've recently upgraded to 13.04b is coincidental to the problem. Even though it may be unlikely, it's how I was taught to trouble-shoot.

    (* Tried a different USB cable to rule out cable failure, tried the drive on a different USB port to rule out a faulty port, and tried the drive on a different computer to rule out the drive being faulty.)

      Yes -- I tried the drive on another machine running kubuntu 12.10 and another USB cable. The drive works on the machine with kubuntu 12.10.
      Also -- the drive is brand new out of the box as well.

        Let's check a couple things.

        First, open a console and run
        Code:
        tail -f /var/log/syslog
        This displays the most recent 10 lines from syslog and the waits. Now plug in your DVD writer, and then unplug it. Do you see some lines appear? If so, copy and paste those here.

        Second, while still in the console, run
        Code:
        udevadm monitor --property > dvdtest.txt
        The cursor will move to the next line but nothing will be displayed. Plug in your DVD writer. Wait a few seconds. Unplug the DVD writer. Wait a few more seconds. Now press Ctrl+C. Reply here and attach the file dvdtest.txt.

        (For the CLI junkies here, I tried the above with udevadm monitor --property | tee dvdtest.txt, so that the output is displayed on the screen and simultaneously captured to a file, but there were some weird timing issues that caused some lines to be missed. The unbuffer utility would fix this, but that requires installing the expect-dev package.)

          I will do this as soon as I get home where my kubuntu laptop and DVD player are.

            Here is the output from syslog when I plugged in my portable DVD:
            Code:
            Mar 27 07:13:21 ironscribe5 kernel: [  273.898016] sr 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
            Mar 27 07:13:21 ironscribe5 kernel: [  273.898210] sr 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5
            Here is the output from ud evadm monitor --property > dvdtest.txt attached:

            Code:
            ID_VENDOR_ID=0e8d
            MAJOR=11
            MINOR=0
            SEQNUM=2341
            SUBSYSTEM=block
            TAGS=:udev-acl:
            UDEV_LOG=3
            UDISKS_PRESENTATION_NOPOLICY=0
            USEC_INITIALIZED=408814301
            SO it looks like the machine IS detecting the portable DVD. Maybe I just have bad media... I will investigate.

            thanks!!

              I dunno...that looks pretty small. I don't have a portable DVD to test with; however, when I insert a USB stick, this is what appears in my syslog:

              And here's the output from udevadm monitor --property: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5654112/

              As you can see, there's a whole lot more. Does anyone here on the forum have a portable DVD they can try this experiment with?

                That's what I see appear at the end of /var/log/syslog when I connect my son's Lite-On USB DVD reader.

                (Edit) Note: No disc was in the drive when it was connected. Also my PC is running Precise rather than Raring, but I doubt that makes much difference to this.

                  Hm. Based on the differences between HalationEffect's results and ironmantis7x's results, it appears that the USB subsystem on inronmantis7x's computer isn't recognizing the drive.

                  @ironmantis7x: have you tried plugging the drive into a different USB port?

                    @SteveRiley: yes I have tried plugging it into a different USB port.
                    Same difference. I can try another portable drive and see if that makes a difference as well.
