emacs23 and emacs24 both fail to run most of the time

Tonight I've established that both emacs 23 and 24 both fail to start most of the time on Kubuntu 13.04.

For some unknown reason both versions will run properly about 10% of the time but when closed and restarted they just appear as a running application in htop or similar. emacs seems to start properly the first time after a reboot or log-in.

I've tried starting emacs without a configuration file but that doesn't help. I am totally lost for an explanation as to why this problem has suddenly appeared. I haven't found any bug reports yet I see the same problem on both my desktop and laptop which are set up in a very similar fashion. Running emacs in a terminal works perfectly its just the GUI version I am having a problem with. I can't test with Kubuntu 12.10 without swapping hard disks but I am sure both versions of emacs were both working when I switched to Kubuntu 13.04.

I'm not a great fan of emacs but I occasionally use it to try something out and if I find a bug or something not working I like to find out what's wrong.

So, is anyone else seeing this problem or have I missed something very obvious?

I've uninstalled the GTK versions of Emacs 23 & 24 and installed the versions with the Lucid interface. Both work as they should and start every time although not as visually attractive. Presumably I came across a GTK problem introduced with recent updates.

Now to try and file a bug report.

Anyone else seeing a similar problem?

Edit: This change allowed Emacs to start on both my desktop and laptop.

      Hello:

I am seeing this problem, and more.

I have compiled emacs-24.2 and emacs-24.3, in addition to reinstalling emacs-24 using synaptic. KDE desktop doesn't allow emacs to run. Neither do some other desktops.

One response to my inquiries suggested it is related to emacs being compiled with gtk3. I compiled with gtk2 and it worked once. I'll try it again. Lucid versions are not an option.

This is a HUGE bug for KDE and other desktops with similar issues.

I've recently updated the bug report to emphasise that I think the problem lies with the oxygen GTK2/3 themes.

Unfortunately either no-one cares or very few users are affected by the very obvious problem that we are both seeing here. I'm sorry to admit that the Ubuntu family of flavours will always be biased towards Gnome/GTK. I'm just one step away from dropping Kubuntu for another flavour as I've always been able to run an alpha or beta of the current development release without any serious problems but not now.

If Kubuntu users could run KDE applications and nothing else then all would be fine. But I currently have problems with Firefox, Thunderbird and now Emacs. Few people have responded to my bug reports or my posts here or on the Ubuntu Forums. No matter how good KDE is, Kubuntu will always inherit whatever Gnome/GTK problems are thrown its way via the shared repositories and in my opinion will always be affected the most.

I really do want to see what's beyond Kubuntu 13.04 but I'm not sure that I'll still be here.
