    Has raring fixed quantal+nvidia?

The release of quantal for nvidia machines was (is?) a total nightmare.

for the first time since finding *buntu i had to downgrade one of my very newly upgraded machines because of the unholy union that was quantal+nvidia.

Does nvidia play along nicely with raring at this point?

Don't know what you're talking about. I've being using Kubuntu since 9.04 with my nvidia 8800GTs and never had a problem.

Look, no offence intended - but are you looking for help or just complaining? If you want some help, great: start posting some information. If not, fine - I'll put this thread on "ignore."

Not every distro or release is going to address every hardware driver issue. Good place to look for answers is Google and focus on ubuntu based solutions to your problem. Here are a few links I got from running a seach for your video card 7900 gt and ubuntu. Now up to you to read and figure out the appropriate solution. Not meaning to sound offensive, but that is the approach I use to looking for solutions to issues I am having. Usually someone out there that has been there and posted a solution that might not be on a specific forum you use.

The nvidia drivers install on raring (from repo) with a annoying modprobe warnin but they operate ok.

I'd suggest that your problems with your setup are the nvidia drivers themselves, not kubuntu. The drivers are constantly being updated and the 7900 gt is a pretty old card, nvidia may have dropped support for it.

Just spend $20 for a GT220 and save your self a lot of hassle. Or stick with the nouveau drivers.

Looks like the last driver for this card from nVidia is 195.36.24 and was released 2010.04.28 and they're not available in the default repos. Try here:

Did you ask for help? I must have missed it.

To be honest, I did not read the title of the thread, and I did not see a real question, just a general broad, slightly ranty inquiry. However, a more polite request for clarification would have been more appropriate.

That said and out of the way, if one reads the Sticky here on devel releases, it should mention that proprietary drivers are often in a bad state, some times they are even unusable during this period, even up to just before release time if the company in question does not have a driver that works with the current xorg/kernel.

Nvidia drivers have for some time now been required different versions for different hardware, often older cards do not have support any longer.

                      Some more things to remember:
                      • One person's nightmare does not equate to everyone having the same dream
                      • One person's success does not always mean universal success
                      • A small bit of detail is always welcome when it comes to hardware
                      • Ask for a bit of that info if it is missing
                      • The "assume" rule
