    How to type Hanja

    Hi,

    I've figured out that I can use ibus (installed with muon) for typing Hangul (Korean: han2).

    Well, sometimes it's intractable to change to "han2" and I have to do it several times until it really changes. But my main problem is: How do I type Hanja in Kubuntu 12.10?

    Alt+f2 and type im-switch(run) and select ibus and log out or reboot I do now know but if the input method is in ibus added it should work.

      OK, thanks for your answer.

      I ran im-switch in a terminal window, then logged out. After logging in the entries in ibus for Korean seem to be the same: Korean, han2 and romaja. Where can I select Hanja?

      Another question: How do I get a virtual keyboard for Hangul to show up on my screen as I do not have a Korean keyboard in real. Kvkbd does not show a Korean keyboard.

          Install scim-tables-ko
          SCIM (Smart Common Input Method) is an input method (IM) platform.

          This package contains SCIM table-based input method data for Korean. Currently the provided tables are Hangul, Hangul Romaja, and Hanja.

          Windows no longer obstructs my view.

            In the ibus menu, there is probably a way to set a shortcut key to activate Hanja. Have you played around with that at all?

              I tried that but didn't find anything.

              OK. But I am not able to switch the language. For example I have set "Control+Alt+q" to activate SCIM. When I press "Control+Alt+q" in Kate it doesn't change.

                You need to install the package ibus-hangul for typing Korean (for Japanese, it's ibus-anthy, and for Chinese, ibus-pinyin).
                After that, log out and in again, right-click on the ibus icon in the system tray and click on settings. Select the second tab, click on "Choose input method", then click on "Korean", and finally on "Add" so it appears in the list of input methods.

                Activating/deactivating using the system tray icon is sometimes not very reliable, so I always use the key combination: Ctrl+Space to activate Ibus, and Ctrl+left-shift to change to the next input method (you can customise this in the Ibus settings, first tab). Never had a problem with that.

                Focus an input window, then activate Ibus using your key combination. In the lower right, you'll see a small bar saying "Korean". Click the settings icon there. On the Hangul tab, set "Romaja" as the keyboard, if you don't have a Korean keyboard. Also, check "commit in word unit" and "Automatic reordering". On the Haja tab, you can set a key for Hanja conversion. Default is F9.

                Go back to your input window where you enabled Ibus, and you can start typing Korean:
                하굴

                When you want to convert a word you've typed in hangul into hanja, simply hit F9, and a candidate window for possible conversions will pop up. Hit enter to choose the topmost candidate, type the number of the desired candidate or simply click on it.
                한자 -> 漢字
                백제 -> 百濟
                조선 -> 朝鮮

                Hit Ctrl+Space once more to deactivate Ibus again.

                  Hi Shimapan,

                  thanks for your answer.

                  ibus-hangul is already installed according to muon. So, I added the input method Korean. Ctrl+Space to activate ibus works but I have set Control+Shift_L to change to the next input method, which does not work: Hitting Control+Shift_L in the Korean mode (e. g. in Kate) doesn't seem to do anything.

                  Above all, I am not able to change the settings for Korean: The button "settings" is grey and cannot be clicked on.

                    It may be that iBus is not set as the input method. In a terminal type:
                    Code:
                    im-switch -l
                    Whats the output?
