Is it another instance of a package in the repos I'm oblivious to? Tried apt-get install plasma-widget-icont-tasks (&icontasks, etc), but no luck.
Icon tasks is in package 'plasma-widgets-addons' (it includes a bunch of extra widgets from KDE)

The kde-look version is the "same" as the version in 'plasma-widgets-addons'. The widget was first released on kde-look but was later included in KDE (so the kde-look version is likely too old to build on newer kde releases)

Ah, so it is the same. I don't care for it because you can't disable grouping, but for the time being it looks to be more functional than smooth tasks.

Any thoughts about whether smoothtasks might work better if I built it *correctly* myself, or is it probably a matter of the program not being compatible with KDE 4.9 in its current state? For that matter, I wonder if my desktop effects were to blame, seeing as how I'm running an atom-powered netbook.

The problem with smooth tasks it that it has been forked and abandoned several times in the past... and has always been unreliable on newer versions of kde due to this.
