Modem-Manager dropping connection of 3G Modem

kubuntu 12.10 last updated 2-3 days ago. I'm currently running past my cap for the month (currently 5 GB) so it'll be a day or so before I can upgrade again.

It seems that Modem-Manager drops my 3G internet connection. I'm not sure if it's a timing issue or is connected to something else.
It has appeared when the system was manually locked at bedtime. When unlocked in the morning the connection is absent and cannot be restarted except after a restart of the computer.

I've tried KPPP without success before restarting. In etc/ppp/options persist is not enabled. But I don't want to change anything without some input from someone that actually knows what needs to be changed.
I've had the connection drop during the night occasionally using another Linux. But very rarely. That I considered to be an ISP thing since it was so rare.

When I allow the screensaver to start by itself I will still not have a connection in the morning, but I can get a connection using Modem-Manager (Which won't happen if I've manually locked the DE).

During all of this I found that KPPP will not start from the Menu. I have to start it from a Konsole/Terminal (with kdesudo of course). I wonder whether I need to edit the entry for it and add launch as a different user under the Advanced tab? If so what's the correct syntax?

I consider myself a User and I pick up this and that along the way. Even so I've managed to keep a system up and running with what I've found with Mr. google and a lot of help from forums over the last nine years I've been Windows free.
