package graphviz installation appears not to work

    package graphviz installation appears not to work

    For quite some time, I have had graphviz installed, although I haven't used it for about 3 years. Today I tried to invoke its "--help" output, and got nothing. The system didn't recognize the program name. I did a reinstall, using apt-get, then Muon (I know - silly, but I'm reduced to "magical responses", since I haven't a clue what's actually happening relative to this problem). The OS still responds with nothing to "which graphviz". Muon says it's installed, and apt-get says it's the latest version.

    KFind tells me that "graphviz" may be found here:

    In /usr/lib/graphviz this is what I see:

    Nowhere do I see something I can actually execute.

    I'm out of ideas at this point, and I don't know what the problem might be. I've never seen a problem like this before.

    Graphviz, which is a command line graph image generator, appear NOT to be installed even when it looks like it should be. It cannot be executed.

    Anyone have any ideas as to what's wrong and how to fix it?

    I've also seen that there's a Kde Gui for graphwiz named "kgraphviewer". You might want to have a look at that one.

      Thanks for your response.

      Yes, Muon agrees that those are the files that get installed.

      Where's the execution module or script? Why do I get this output at the command line:

      tomc@LDT:/$ graphviz
      graphviz: command not found
      tomc@LDT:/$ which graphviz
      tomc@LDT:/$

      There's obviously nothing executable installed. I've never see this before. Install a program and it vanishes. Muon says its installed, but the OS says no.

      As for kgraphviewer, I'm well aware of it, but it needs graphviz, I think - in any case, I can't get it to actually DO anything (probably because it cannot invoke graphviz).

      So...still dead in the water I'm afraid.

        The graphviz package contains no actual binary with that name. Check
        Code:
        man graphviz
        for a list of the tools included in the package.

            Tom, I changed my post after checking a bit more. The package is a collection of various tools, but none are called graphviz.

              OK. That's why I couldn't get it running. Thanks for checking and for the clarification. Now I have to backtrack and dig into my notes. About 3 years ago I was running and using graphviz. Something's changed and I don't know what. You've given me an angle to pursue on the problem, and I appreciate that!

              Update: Well that didn't take long. What's changed is my memory. I mis-remembered. Convinced that the executable was "graphviz" I marooned myself on the sandbar of a false assumption! Looking at "man graphviz" my memory is jogged, and I see what the executable(s) are actually called. Nuts. Time to make better notes.

                  It IS interesting, in retrospect, how hard it can be to see your assumptions, especially the one (or more) that's leading you astray. Confidence may be the ultimate siren, as sooner or later it WILL mislead you. It has some friends, of course: timidity (actually one of my favorite pieces of software, if you're not familiar with it, but that's another story), and ignorance. It's a dangerous world! Thanks again for your help. Sooner or later we all discover that we cannot "do it alone". I encounter that fact often.
