SATA drives all have their own channels so by using RAID you reach near double speeds.

I don't use RAID anymore as I have fully transitioned to btrfs instead.

For the speed increase? What are the advantages of btrfs in that regard?

btrfs is not as fast as pure RAID0 but has a ton of features no other file system has and is usable on multiple devices. Myself and one other forum member - dibl - have been btrfs users for several years. Just search the forum for btrfs and all our posts will come up.

As far as the server, as I consider upgrading next year, I may opt for a much more powerful server and use image booting on thin clients or very light weight PC's (like Zboxes). Currently, the majority of the "heavy lifting" like transcoding video is done on my desktop, the server hosts all the data files and does torrent service as well as dlna, and our other devices (laptops, etc) do little other than host a desktop.
