Today's boot didn’t produce a crash either. I tried running Star Trek Online but it failed to start. LOTRO works except for the lotro store but that is a known problem that has a work around on the wine application database.I'll try deleting and recreating the STO bottle then installing the game today or tomorrow. Should I apply the latest updates from Muon? One of the updates is xsever-xorg-input-synaptics.

Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

A new crash just occurred! This causes everything to disappear and I go back to the login screen for Ubuntu 12.10 just like it appears on first boot. Very annoying as I was in the middle of setting up my load out for my new Star Ship in Star Trek Online! > I told it to send the error report. It didn't say weather it did or not. I saw something about a percise package in there so maybe its due to a version conflict! I wonder if the Kubuntu upgrade script has a bug in it?

Kubuntu 12.10 is an Epic FAIL!

@#$%^&*() Kubuntu 12.10 just crashed back to the login screen again! 2nd time in less than 4 hours!:mad::mad::mad: I thought Linux was supposed to be better than Windows!

It crashed on boot up but I accidentally clicked on the close button. All I can remember is /usr/bin/nu something.

I have a separate partition for /home but not /var. Now that think about it, I decided just to try to get Kubuntu on disk and then do a fresh install since there are so many broken packages and conflicting packages. Is there a way to keep my configuration settings? I wish I knew how this happened the only thing I can guess is that since I upgrade from Karmic, then I had to upgrade to each new version and maybe something went wrong along the way. I hope it doesn’t crash to the log in screen while I am downloading or burning the disk.

In post #71, I asked you to run a command that started with diff and two commands that started with synaptikscfg. In post #72 you replied with the output of the diff command. In post #73, I asked you to run a different command that started with cp (to replace your current touchpad configuration file with the default file). In post #74 you duplicated what you wrote in post #72. In both post #74 and post #75 you mentioned that the two other commands from my post #71 produced no output.

It appears you haven't yet run the command I wrote in post #73. Like I said, I don't have much conviction it'll work, but it's something to try.

There is no need to have a separate /var partition.

I agree that you should rebuild your PC. I'd advise against attempting to keep configuration settings, as various file formats have changed on occasion. You'll spend more time trying to morph and fix configuration problems than simply starting fresh and cleanly configuring a new installation exactly the way you want.

I didn’t run the command because that crash appears to have been fixed but now their is a new crash. It just occurred to me that it might be related so maybe I should try it anyway...
                  Code:
                  steve7233@steve7233-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$ cp ~/.config/synaptiks/touchpad-defaults.json ~/.config/synaptiks/touchpad-config.json
                  steve7233@steve7233-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$
No output. I will reboot now... No crash yet. I wish I had tried this sooner. I managed to make a 12.10 DVD so if I find to many problems I can rebuild my Kubuntu install. You said various file formats have changed. How often does that happen? As I said I started with Karmic and upgraded to each version one at a time. Maybe when the file format changed is when it messed up on one or more upgrades.

Rats it crashed to the login screen in the middle of a battle with the Tholians in STO. No crash report so I have no way of knowing why. Maybe there is a memory leak some place. It seems to happen mostly after I have been using the computer a while.

May I suggest you rebuild your box? It's highly unusual for something to cause X to crash in the middle of a session like that. I think your system is in a pretty unstable state, probably not worth the time to recover at this point. Or maybe the renowned Tholian punctuality is simply going to cause you no end of grief

Ya I was thinking I'll have to rebuild Kubuntu. Must have been all those upgrades. To late to rebuild tonight. I will do it tomorrow. I'll have to cough, cough use winblow$s to finish off the tholians! You'd think they'd run away when they see my Chimera Heavy Destroyer coming at them armed with some of the best ship weapons and stuff in the game!

Since motherboards don't initialize USB drives right away if I just put GRUB and /boot on my internal drive and everything else on the USB drive will that work? On another thought, could my conflicting packages and such have been caused by installing on an external USB drive? I know ubuntuu can be installed to a thumb drive, but is there a conflict with a USB hard drive?

Since no one responded and I don't want risk dmaging my Widows partition then I will have to stick with booting via USB. I find that when I boot from a cold state, I have to what a few seconds a due a warm reboot, because the USB is too slow to start up. If I don't then it goes straight to winblow$ instead of the GRUB menu. This why I asked the above question. O well, here goes.... * takes a deep breath and ... Wait a minute I gota find my 12.10 disk first. Lol...
