Funny behaviour with the Kickoff and Kaffeine

Hello

Since yesterday I get a funny behaviour with the Kickoff: some of the options are not selcetable any longer, especially not the important ones
· Switch off
· Restart



And in Kaffeine I can not start the TV-Selection and get the message «No device found.» All other four options are working. TV was running the day before yesterday and not yesterday and today.

Both strange effects have come up simutaneously.

I have not had an upgrade or an dist-upgrade.

Does this remain after logging out and back in or rebooting? You have had no package updates the days before you discovered these problems? I don't reboot desktops often, sometimes I have seen this sort of thing happen at some point after some package updates, even days later. So my suggestion is to first try logging off and back in, maybe even restarting the login manager - this should fix the missing logout/restart options if my thesis is correct. I don't know if this will fix the kaffeine issue as that is as likely to be a kernel module not loading, a reboot is the quickest fix to try there.

Thanks claydoh. I have logged out and in umteen times. In between, especially when I want to use my Satellite TV, I fall back to 12.04 which works perfect. So, it can not be that.

However, I did make a change to the /usr/share folder: I opened it up by changing the security: I left root to be the owner, but made the Group «users» to enable «show & change possible». I did that too to selected programs in /usr/lib (Gimp, Firefox, Thunderbird, LibrOffice, etc). All of them I do not agree with the preforced paranoic security system. I use FF, TB, Mozilla, LibreOffice with identical ressources at the moment with 12.04 and 12.10, each one with two users (me and my wife). And I do not want to have, for exemple, multiple places where the resources are saved, so with each user and version these resources are different and I would have to add a brush in four places. Both of us are in both versions in the group «users». Every resource is placed, if it is possible that I can direct the application myself, on a special folder in the partition «anwender».

The worst one are the fonts. Here I can see no way to have an identical database for all four instances 12.04 me, 12.04 wife, 12.10 me and 12.10 wife, same is for Scribus and other apps. But this is probably quite another topic.

I know I am suffering lack of sleep, but I don't quite understand what you have done, exactly, and why. I am going to have to sleep on it, hoping someone with a clear head will jump in

and did the "anomalies" begin after changing these things and after restarting the computer?

I would suggest that you change them back ,,,,,,and if you must have unrestricted access to these things and care not for the security implications or the possibility of inadvertently hosing your system then add your self to the root group ,,,,,and good luck.

Thanks. I have changed everything back to the situation before this incident. After three restarts (with power off for at least 10') nothing has changed, still the same problems.

I also checked the Firmware for my satellite card, it is still in /lib/firmware.

Can I send any log file? If yes which one?

exactly how did you change the permissions/owner of the files/Directory’s ?

do a

ls -la /

and the same on /usr and /usr/share , all should be root root , owner/group

then remind me what elce you changed and I will check @hear and see what should be what.

did you change anything in /bin or /bin it's self ?

As I changed also some directories in /usr/lib, I made a screen shot of their present state: (sorted by owner)



I changed the rights via Krusader (Administator) by opening the Properties, choose Rights, wrote Arran in the field for owner and users in the field for group and attributed the users full rights.

So, I am now going to change these back to original and will report accordingly.

I reinstated the original situation with the rights. Everything belongs now again to root/root. But there was even with a 5' power switched off, no change.

I realised, that Muon is not working properly too, it looks like it runs in an endless loop, without any real working. I tried to uninstall Kaffeine. After about three minutes of no result, I tried it with the konsole and there it worked properly. Uninstalling and installing afterwards. I made in Muon a screen shot of uninstallations and installations since Dec 12:
I can not see any movement who could really do that havoc. The ones today were just the changes I tried on the console. The only fresh installation was Saturday, 15th December the hpijs-ppds, all the rest were just actualisations.

I also remarked that I have an icon in the control list, telling me that I have no Network-connection.

After I realised the lack of that network connection, I changed back to 12.04 and checked here. The result is, that it says there is one running cable network (my Ethernet connection).

Unclear is, why in 12.10 the Internet, Email, Filezilla is working, but not Muon and Kaffeine. And I can see no relation to the missing switch-offs in the K-Kickoff-Menu.

How do I have to re-establish that Ethernet connection?

It looks, there is no hope for a solution. So I better will delete and reinstall. However, there was a lot of work in the customisation of appearance and configuration of each program.

I would like to safe as many of these files and then copy them into the new version. I also know that may of these files are stored under /home and /usr. Where else?

Anybody interested to help me with this questions?

Your customizations are in the hidden "dot" files in your home directory. So you might want to copy all of those to a backup medium. Some have only the customization for a particular package, such as .avidemux and .gimp-2.9. Others, like .config, have many customizations, and you need to be a bit cautious about restoring all of them (some of your problems may be connected to a "customization" ....).In general, you should avoid make changes in /usr, including /usr/share, unless you are certain of all the consequences of a change. For example, there's no problem adding wallpapers of the appropriate size to /usr/share/wallpapers. But there is also the possibility of messing things up, so be careful about /usr.
