    Upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 won't start

I have just completred what I thought was a painless upgrade. All went well until the restart. It now just gets to

"stopping at system v runlevel compatibility"

and then goes blank for a few seconds and then up it comes again, there is quite a bit of other stuff there as well but it goes fast. I have seen other post with this problem but none of the solutions seemed to work. I need someone to hold my hand gently through this so that I can get up and running. I am in the forum via another maschine as the linux box is stuck.

    Thanks

    John

Do you ever get to a login prompt? Can you boot the recovery option (should be an option in the grub menu, press and hold shift during boot if you don't see this menu)?

      Thanks James,

I have found the Grub Menu

      The choices are:
      Ubuntu
      Advanced Options for Ubuntu
and a couple of memory check options.

When I select "Advanced Options for Ubuntu" I get:
      Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-19-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-19-generic (recovery mode)
      Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-35-generic-pae
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-35-generic-pae (recovery mode)

I tried the option: "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.5.0-19-generic (recovery mode)" and get:

resume- resume normal boot ** I tried this and got nowhere**
clean - try to make clear space
dpkg - repair broken packages **I tried this and got stuck at "fsk from util-linux 2.20.1 /dev/sdal:clean 122911/119360 files 3357689/4760832 blocks**

and I can't go any further (I have to shut down by holding the power button)

other options in the recovery menu:

      fsck
      grub
      network
      root
      system-summary

I assume you know what they are so I won't write it all ou but if you need more I can.

Any idea where to go now?

      Thanks again.

      John

This is checking your file system for errors (and fixing them), I would let it run fully, it can take a while on a large partition.

If it doesn't get past that point at all then try booting a live cd and running fsck on your partitions manually.

          Thanks again for the reply,

I am afraid I just gave up. I was able to reinstall the 12.04 from the CD that I had lying about and I am staying with it. My computer has no DVD so I cannot do a disk install, the usb install didn't work (computer couldn't find usb). I may try again when I have endless hours with nothing better to do.

          Thanks again for your help.
