Okay, took the plunge today. This is what I got.
Upgrade went without errors. At reboot I get "ubuntu" as first kernel in grub boot page. Starting this my screen shows the boot splash then goes blank. No recovery mode from here. Using theadvanced options I get two other kernels: 3.5.0.18 and .17 both with recovery mode. Using recovery mode from either the boot hangs at something about USB.... Booting with the no splash option from normal .18 I can login. startx throws me a fatal server, cannot find screens, x.org error. doing update/upgrade from apt-get and then sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop tells me I have the latest version.
What else can I try?
Had to reinstall. Pain.
