    Howto autologin with lightdm?

Successfully upgraded to 12.10 but have one problem: not paying proper attention resulted in ending up with lightdm as displaymanager instead of kdm. Do not mind as such, but I lost the autologin function.

Thought the easy solution would be to reinstall kdm and set it as default display manager. Rebooting ends up with a black screen - kdm not starting.

Alternatively, howto configure lightdm for autologin? Help appreciated.

    Cheers

You can do it through kde

      System Settings:Login Screen (LightDM)|General

Thanks, but the Login Screen had disappeared in the KDE System settings, probably because kdm had been uninstalled during upgrading.

Kubuntu desktop or something else ?

The Kubuntu desktop /1, 2/ metapackage /3/ is depending the lightdm-kde-greeter /4/. The lightdm-kde-greeter is installing the KDE control module and with it the desktop: /usr/share/kde4/services/kcm_lightdm.desktop.

The kcm_lightdm.desktop will be shown as the Login Screen settings on the KDE System Settings. If the optional package kdm /5/ is installed then there are two settings for the Login Screen.

          Changing dm (kdm/gdm/lightdm)
          Code:
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

Reinstalled kdm and got the Login Screen back. Installed the metapackage /3/ kubuntu-desktop and got the Login Screen (LightDM).

Set kdm to be the default display manager and rebooted. Got stuck (as before), last log entry "Stopping enable remaining boot-time encrypted block device"

Could it be that the KDM problem is the graphic card (ATI Radeon HD 5750). When running 12.04 I had the fglrx Catalyst drivers installed, but uninstalled just before upgrading to 12.10. Don't think I even rebooted before upgrading. What I mean is that the Gallium 0.4 on AMD Juniper works on Unity and Gnome, but in my case it is not working on KDE??

No, the problem was not solved by reinstalling Catalyst, but seems to have something to do with X server.

Installed fglrx, kubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-full. Made kdm the default desktop and rebooted. Ended up in a terminal. The last few entries in syslog:

Oct 21 08:34:42 DESKTOP kdm[1274]: X server died during startup
Oct 21 08:34:42 DESKTOP kdm[1274]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled
Oct 21 08:34:54 DESKTOP kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped.

Trying to remember what I answered an hour ago which has disappeared. My problem was how to autologin, which was solved. I don't mind using lightdm as default display manager, especially after being able to use autologin. First after logging out do I see the lightdm login-screen, and I can live with that, though it is a bit embarrassing as a KDE fan to have to use a Unity login-screen.

I had no problems with installing Catalyst using fglrx-9.000-0ubuntu3, which I used to need for XBMC, but with the newer kernels I think it is overkill. Anyway, after making kdm the default display manager, rebooting ended up in a console. The error message was the same, regardless of if I had Catalyst installed or not. Forgot to mention one line towards the end in syslog: "kdm[1879]: Cannot execute "/etc/gdm/failsafeXServer": No such file or directory".

Gallium 0.4 on AMD Juniper works on Unity and Gnome. Yes, I am using the themed lightdm greeter for KDM. No, I am not using xorg.conf, should I?

The XOrg should work without he xorg.conf.... Just trying to to find (guessing) a reason for the malfunctions.

Thanks. Suppose the best way of avoiding these kind of malfunctions is to use fresh install rather than upgrading.

You posted earlier in this thread that you used Gnome to get back in. That means you were using the Gnome greeter. The message above would seem to me to be relevant, as it indicates that GDM is still being referenced as the login greeter, not KDM or LightDM.

Last time I made a fresh install (I think) was 10.04 and at some time I installed Gnome, and it is still there. Later same with Unity. Have always had KDE as default dedktop. Now I do not know what the different greeters look like - is that the same as the login screen? Thought my present login screen was lightdm. I have unity-greeter and lightdm-kde-greeter installed.
